It is about creating machines that can be our partners” – Cynthia Breazeal Just the way robotics is engulfing the globe with its presence, here comes in an extended arm - Swarm Robotics that goes a step further. It is an approach that operates on the concept of swarm intelligence – the brain of brains, with which multiple robots can solve issues collectively by creating beneficial structures. They simulate behavior that is observed in natural conditions just like a swarm of bees or a flock of birds. The Swarm Robots market size was valued at USD 7.91 billion in 2022 and is predicted to reach USD 35.79 billion by 2030 with a CAGR of 17.20% from 2023 to 2030. A robot swarm has a huge number of physical and simple robots that interact with each other and with the environment in which they are stationed. Swarm robotics depends on principles that are scalable, fault tolerant and flexible. It does not have to rely on any external infrastructure and comes up as an ideal approach when there is concurrent action needed characterized by high redundancy. As a self-organizing multi-robot system, it could consist of homogenous and heterogenous robots that evolve into pre-defined patterns without external help. The swarm robots are competent to adapt to changes in the environment by altering their problem-solving methodologies, through incremental reprogramming and not treating the whole swarm. Recent studies have indicated the increasing usage of swarm robotics, through real-time monitoring, in multiple application areas: - Military and civil services - Security and surveillance - Agriculture - Tracking and cleaning - Demining, search and rescue - Planetary and underwater exploration - Cleaning of toxic spills - Managing oil leaks - Disaster recovery and patrolling - Scientific models for collective decision making Comprehending the implementation of swarm robotics itself brings about a swarm of advantages tagged along, even though the decentralized nature of the same may bring along challenges, especially in a real-world situation. A newly built #robot inspired by snails offers an innovative way to move through difficult, dangerous terrain. Biomimicry is nothing new within the field of #robotics. But while many aquatic and flying examples can #navigate three-dimensional environments, that often isn’t the case for bots relegated to walking, crawling, or rolling along the ground. Developed by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, these snail bots manoeuvre as a troop when an environment becomes too difficult for a single explorer. When in “free mode”, the robots move across a surface much like a traditional tank or bulldozer. 🤖🏠 𝐃𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐎𝐰𝐧 𝐀 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭? The popularity of domestic robots, such as vacuums and lawn-mowing robots, has been increasing. These automated helpers can handle household chores, allowing their owners to focus on work, family, or leisure activities. According to 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬, vacuum, and lawn-mowing robots haven't fully reached the mainstream yet though. Fewer than 1 in 6 respondents in each surveyed market own either of these types of robots.
