The Department of Energy (DOE) is funding 18 projects to enhance U.S. solar manufacturing and develop dual-use photovoltaic (PV) technologies. Ten projects focus on improving silicon wafer and cell production and advancing technologies like building-integrated PV and agrivoltaics. Solar efficiency has progressed significantly since Bell Labs' introduced 6% silicon solar panels in the 1950s. However, while there are solar prototypes that have reportedly achieved impressive efficiency, such as the 47% rate attained by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's six-junction solar cell, the materials used to reach these highs are oftentimes expensive. This limits applications to scientific research or specific use cases, rather than commercial deployment or integration into a country's generation capacity. The relationship between cost-effectiveness and efficiency is, therefore, important to consider before any rollout of upgraded solar assets. However, discourse around perovskite solar technology suggests that it could very well represent the next step in advancing the clean energy transition in the interim until these higher efficiency prototypes are market-ready.
Another record in renewable generation efficiency has been achieved! ✅ Oxford PV and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems have established a new benchmark for solar panel efficiency at 25%, slightly surpassing the 24% level found in existing commercial assets. This accomplishment resulted from combining perovskite, a synthetic solar conversion material, with commercially available silicon solar cells, enabling a 20% increase in electricity generation compared to conventional silicon cell technology. Oxford PV states that this new milestone is just a step towards the perovskite-on-silicon solar cells' theoretical maximum efficiency of around 43%. As research progresses, and the costs of materials reduces, we may very well see a rise in cost-effective, high-efficiency solar PV assets. #UKEnergy #Solar #Efficiency
