I think the strategy of creating value can be approached through two distinct paths: serving a large user base for specific tasks or catering to a niche group for deep, specialized work. Each path leads to the high-value zone but requires a different balance in leveraging automation for both mass users and power users. At the product level, we can integrate multiple user flows to accommodate diverse use cases. For instance, Figma is a tool that successfully caters to both amateurs and professionals by providing a versatile and adaptable platform. This integration allows the product to meet the varying needs of its broad user spectrum. On a portfolio level, having a cluster of tools designed to meet versatile demands can enhance overall value. Each tool can specialize in a particular area, collectively creating a comprehensive suite that serves both general and specialized needs. Striking the right balance in automation and integration across both product and portfolio levels is key to maximizing value creation for all types of engineering users.

Great post and a serious concern going forward. A bit of cynicism from my experience with this situation aligns with - what is the reward for being efficient?
