Village Mindedness – What does it mean, and why do we need it? We’ve been using the word ‘community’ so often and for so long now that it tires the mind to hear it. It doesn’t seem to carry the same weight anymore. It has lost its potency and presence in our language. The word needs a rest and with respect to the invocational power of language, and for the world, we must do better. Village mindedness is an attempt to distinguish a condition of understanding from a living arrangement which may or may not carry that understanding. From what I can see, 'villages' as they existed and functioned from the earliest times, are a rare thing in my part of the world. But living with the 'village' in mind, is something we can still carry into our daily lives regardless of where we find ourselves. Perhaps it stirs up ancient memories of a time when our fates were inextricably bound to our fellow villagers. We were invested, committed, and bonded—through necessity. And from what I can tell, this is something many of us are trying to re-establish in the world today, often against the odds. There was a time when we didn’t have the option to just change jobs, move house, or leave relationships when things got tough or didn't suit us. We had far more skin in the game. We cared for and respected our relationships and living arrangements in a way that feels very different from the transient nature of life now.
