The role of internships cannot be downplayed in shaping careers in the GIS field. The specializations taken by my former classmates have mainly been shaped by their first internship or job post-graduation. This includes ethics such as integrity and accountability. Employers shouldn't keep asking for experience and very specific knowledge that they do not help cultivate. #GIS #Cartography

You couldn’t tell me I wasn’t the cutest thing on MUSC’s campus 💅😂 But seriously, that summer, I was learning Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and using it to map birth weights in the state. Fast forward to 2007, on my first “real” job, and I was using GIS maps to view wetland🏞️ coverage in the region. And this is why internships are invaluable‼️ Had I not interned, I would’ve had no idea what GIS was, much less how it fit into my work. Internships create a more experienced job candidate. And a more experienced job candidate is one that is more likely to: ➡️ Be hired ➡️ Be paid more at hiring ➡️ Make more 💵 throughout their career This Thursday is National Intern Day. I’ll be sharing stories from recent interns of color and how their internships positively impacted their lives. PLEASE SHARE, so that it reaches those who need to hear it- OUR students! #NationalInternDay #AspiretoIntern #WriteFrame

Just Graduated from UMF - Environmental Policy and Planning Major Sole Proprietorship for GIS and map-making. Willing to work with Maine municipalities.
The past twelve weeks have been the most exciting, enrichening experience I could have asked for. Since May 30, I started working a land use planning and mapping internship at Kennebec Valley Council of Governments in Fairfield while working from home; and today, on August 16, that comes to a close. At KVCOG, ample opportunities have arisen for me to make and deliver digital maps for both my coworkers and KVCOG member municipalities. Spatial data were added, edited, copied, clipped, georeferenced, analyzed and organized within ArcGIS Pro to make all sorts of maps. It's amazing to learn what somebody can do with GIS! Additionally, projects were created in ArcGIS StoryMaps and Microsoft Word, allowing me to develop my writing skills and media design skills. I am leaving this internship feeling more confident in my ability to use ArcGIS Pro in particular. This was my first time working from home. I appreciate the flexibility my schedule brings and how it allows me to better practice a wellness routine around it. There are set hours every weekday when I start and stop working. I do wish that I could have been able to leave my "office" more often, though, and perhaps conduct some data collection in the field for GIS. But what I can do at home is what I can feel comfortable doing, such as making maps, writing emails and participating in Zoom meetings. Learning about what it exactly is that planners "plan" has been interesting, as well. From what I've heard, it's a LOOOT of meetings, public engagement and playing the waiting game on emails. The highlight of my internship was Annual Planning Day at the Solon Hotel. It was an opportunity to showcase my GIS work to other governmental employees, and I honestly wasn't sure I would be able to attend because I lacked a car of my own at the time. Luckily, carpooling arrangements with a co-worker came to fruition, and I was able to make it to Solon. Planning Day is when I received a new mapping project and learned the importance of making professional connections. It ended up being the project I was most proud of to have finished this summer. To think that it might not have been possible if I hadn't communicated with my coworkers! Speaking of car... that's what the earnings I made during this internship went to. Mid-July, I now have my own set of wheels! Overall, a good experience at KVCOG! I would like to thank KVCOG Executive Director Joel Greenwood for supervising me this summer and answering my many questions about GIS. I'd also like to thank Peggy McKee, Director at UMaine's Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, for accepting me into the MGSIP for a second consecutive summer. I now have three years of ArcGIS experience and increased efficiency in my written and verbal communication skills, my digital document design skills and my time management skills. That will certainly benefit me in the future, I know it!
