Help oto to get great PMs

Executives – Don’t fall for the product manager “Industry Experience” fallacy Hiring a software product manager? Why care about the industry they previously served? Job postings for software product managers, often require narrow industry experience like ecommerce, banking or healthcare. I have found that previous vertical industry experience is not useful. Instead, have the PM quickly get CURRENT market/user info: - Identify the target audience - Understand user goals and pain points - Prioritize the pains, in the context of goals - ID the next most important problems to solve - Socialize your product plan with stakeholders and your team - Do all of this again about quarterly These are true across all customer segments. AND – PMs should be interviewing and surveying users quarterly anyway.  DEFINITELY send your new PMs out to user in the first 90 days. If your PMs do this, users, customers, execs and coworkers will trust that their plan is based on fact, on good process, and is current. Extreme Curiosity: you ask "why" 3-5 times in a row for the same problem and are excited to tap into your inner archaeologist digging and digging and not being satisfied until you truly understand the root cause. You've shipped features in a small PM team, love both the strategy and the details.
