Year 2: Day 257: September 13, 2024 : Have you ever wondered why people follow through on commitments even when the circumstances change? Today’s principle is Commitment and Consistency. Once people make a choice, they tend to stick with it to appear consistent. Practical example: In fundraising, getting someone to agree to a small initial donation often leads to them donating more over time because they've mentally committed to the cause. In your sales pitch, start with a small, manageable request—people are likely to follow through on larger requests later.

Do your appeals have a “big number” problem? Do you pitch out an appeal remarking about the millions of people who experience a problem? You’re making a mistake — here’s why. People have a hard time relating to big numbers. If you send an appeal that tells a story of 800 million people going to bed hungry tonight, the average donor doesn't believe his $50 is going to make a difference. What will $50 do to make a dent in this large of a problem? Instead, tell a story of one person the reader could help. The story helps the reader connect to someone he can see himself helping with his $50 donation. Use the big numbers to reinforce the donation decision. #fundraising
