“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” - Leonardo da Vinci. Everyone knows this quote. And everyone likes to quote from time to time. Especially when they face something complicated. But why is simplicity the ultimate sophistication? Let me answer with 3 examples: 1. Classic Italian Kitchen --> Pasta aglio e oglio. Pasta, oil, garlic. Simple, difficult to master. --> Pasta caccio e pepe. Pasta, pecorino, pepper. Simple, difficult to master. You have 3 ingredients for the complete dish. You cannot hide behind anything else. You must know what you do. 2. Music Ever listened to Pink Floyd? Sure you have. Pay attention to how David Gilmour plays his solos. You hear every. single. note! Why does he play like this? To answer in his own sense: Otherwise he gets confused. You can be a shred master, play super fast or super complicated. But if I do not hear the notes, it is overcomplicated. 3. Dance The basic step is everything. Having the steps mastered is a must. Without it you will never improvise, learn figures, dance. So why is simplicity the ultimate sophistication? Because you cannot hide anything in simplicity. And without having simple basics mastered, you cannot add complexity!
