Day 18 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth: There are more possibilities in play! Stonehouse: Building on everything that is great about Stonehouse, this aims to be a ambitious neighbourhood scale demonstration of what a regenerative, healthy, economically vibrant neighbourhood could look like. Led by Nudge Community Builders, it specifically wishes to bring focus onto 3 critical aspects to unlocking this future: * property and land ownership for wealth retention; * what a financial ecosystem needs to look like to lubricate and help fuel the future to emerge; and * how we organise ourselves that unlocks our humanness. National Marine Park - https://buff.ly/4cCP0Ri Plymouth has been awarded £11.6 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to develop the UK’s first National Marine Park with a forward-thinking approach to urban planning and environmental sustainability. This could enable us to deeply consider our natural assets at a city level and what it would really take to steward them healthily in collaboration as a city. Freeport - https://buff.ly/4dtJQse The Plymouth and South Devon Freeport is aiming to attract investment into marine, defence and space technologies (inc military vehicles and submarines) and significant investments are planned in Plymouth in areas of , construction and ocean technologies – how will these investments truly account and solve for the material and environmental constraints and the externalities (indirect impacts) that are associated with them? So, we're not sure what happened on Friday to day five of our #FestiveCountdown? 🤔 We think the elves may have been playing their games or perhaps the team Christmas parties started too early 🥳 Anyway, it's never too late to post so here goes, and we’re in Leeds with our growing team there, celebrating a great year with some fantastic highlights: 🎄 As session partners to UKREiiF, we welcomed more than 250 of our clients, collaborators and colleagues to our event at Bomba Paella as part of the fringe programme. 🎄 We shared our experience of creating resilient neighbourhoods at Climate Innovation District, the UK’s largest sustainable urban living project with fbe Leeds 🎄 We reached exciting milestones at our projects across Yorkshire, including: - The opening of the penultimate building as part of the refurbishment of Wakefield’s Grade II* listed Rutland Mills into a creative hub, Tileyard North; Topping out at The Store House, the new retail and student development at Briggate in Leeds - Completing the restoration of Doncaster Corn Exchange, bringing it back to its former glory - Sustainable housing at Ordnance Lane in York receiving the green light, a project that will deliver healthy, low carbon homes and green space for the community #Leeds #engineers #sustainability #structures #Yorkshire #transport #urbaninfrastructure #civils

It was a pleasure to take part in a BBC News InDepth debate on housing chaired by Mark Easton, BBC Home Editor alongside Nicholas Boys Smith, Chair of CREATE STREETS and Roger Mortlock, CEO of CPRE The countryside charity. It is great to see the BBC making space for a more in depth, nuanced debate about solutions to the housing crisis. Here are some of the questions we explored and my responses… We need new homes, where should they go? 🗣 We need a housing offer that works for everyone, building new homes and communities right across England. Regen or growth? 🗣 It is right that we consider all options, including regeneration and building new communities, and we must ensure local people are involved in the process. Is there enough brownfield land to build all the homes we need? 🗣 A brownfield first approach is great, but brownfield land alone won't be enough to deliver the quantity of homes we need - not to mention, some brownfield land is not appropriate for development - so it's right that the government looks at all options for meeting the housing need. Can we build at scale and ensure quality? 🗣 The debate shouldn’t be housing quality vs housing quantity – we need both. All homes should be well designed, meet the needs of residents and enhance their wellbeing – this means making sure they are accessible, adaptable, sustainable and crucially for us, affordable.
