We we speak about 'net zero', we mean that we balance the amount of greenhouse gases we emit with the amount we remove from the atmosphere, thus preventing further global warming. Solar energy is being deployed at a massive scale to help us do that by replacing fossil fuels with electricity generated from the sun. While it certainly cannot power our entire way of life (we simply use far to much energy), solar energy can reduce our dependence on imported oil and gas, improve our energy security, and create jobs and economic opportunities. A recent IEA report highlights that countries must strengthen their plans to triple global renewable power capacity by 2030 - a goal set at COP28 to limit global warming. As countries prioritize solar and wind in the renewable energy ramp-up, a key challenge will be integrating these intermittent sources into power grids. Produced from renewable electricity, hydrogen and captured CO2, renewable methanol is a liquid fuel that can utilize surplus renewable power. It is a transportable energy carrier compatible with existing infrastructure, making it an effective solution to balance renewable power supply and demand fluctuations. Countries' renewable energy plans fall short of target, says IRENA Summary: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has released a report highlighting that current government plans and targets for renewable energy deployment are set to achieve only half of the growth needed to meet the U.N.'s climate goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. This goal, along with a target to double energy efficiency, is vital to limiting global warming to 1.5°C this century. To meet the renewable energy target set during COP28, global installed capacity would need to rise from 3.9 terawatts (TW) today to 11.2 TW by 2030, requiring an additional 7.3 TW in under seven years. However, based on current trajectories, the world is likely to fall short by 3.8 TW, or 34%, by the end of the decade. The report also emphasizes the need for a massive increase in investment, with annual spending on renewable capacity needing to triple from $570 billion in 2023 to $1.5 trillion per year by 2030. Furthermore, the annual rate of energy intensity improvement needs to double, from 2% in 2022 to 4% annually through 2030. One of the weaknesses of the #COP28 #GlobalStocktake outcome is the lack of a mechanism to track progress towards the new global goals for #fossilfuels, #renewables, #efficiency etc. The IEA is now taking this on for the energy-related parts. Like others, they find that all metrics are off-track, except for #renewables and #EVs

A Challenge to the Renewable Energy Sector: (2nd Attempt) We would all like to believe that renewables are the solution to manmade Global Warming. Unfortunately, this is fantasy. Our use of Fossil Fuels is insanity,, our use of Renewable Fuels is insanity on steroids. Renewable Fuels cause significantly more Global Warming than Fossil Fuels. Despite what the uneducated masses have adopted as “belief”, Renewable Energy is not a gift of Pixie dust or of a magnanimous Sun God. Humanity is tethered to an inescapable reality: Energy is never Free. The Energy we consume always existed in a previous form. Energy cannot be conjured from nothing. Additional to this, there is a MONUMENTAL difference between Fossil fuelled and Renewable fuelled energy. Fossil fuelled energy = excitable energy. Renewable fuelled energy = Instantaneous energy From our environment’s perspective, excitable energy has the impact of dropping a paper clip on an egg. From our environment’s perspective, instantaneous energy has the impact of dropping a car on an egg (quickly devasting). Fossil fuels are comparable to batteries, ‘charged’ over millions of years by ancient energy, Yesterday’s Energy. Most significantly, in exchange for a very SMALL amount of input energy we can release VAST amounts of this ancient energy from these fuels. The input energy being miniscule compared to the vast output energy. Effectively, the consumption of fossil fuels is the living (us) consuming the long dead. A gas fired power station can generate a million megawatts of electricity in exchange for a large amount of gas (fuel) but in exchange only for the energy needed to ignite/excite one spark (energy). Let say it takes 1-watt (energy) to generate a spark, then per this example, one million megawatts of electricity is exchanged for the cost/input (energy) of 1 watt. [1-watt of input energy = 1-million megawatts of output energy]. Renewables are not excitable, they take their energy directly from another place, instantaneously (in the now). This other place being our delicate and precious ecosphere. The abysmal accumulative efficiencies of our technologies dictate that for every megawatt of renewable energy generated more than 30 megawatts of energy are ‘extracted’ from our environment. [30 million megawatts of ecospheric input energy = 1-million megawatts of renewable output energy]. The consumption of Renewable Energy is akin to the living consuming the living and that which might otherwise live at some future time. All renewables are powered by heat. Heat is pulled from their vicinity and convection is caused in the atmosphere. This displacement of heat (there otherwise would not occur) ripples out through the atmosphere and accelerates the atmosphere’s rate-of-change. This imposed rate-of-change causes a greater exchange of heat energy between the Sun and Earth. We live in an ecosphere, my body temperature impacts the entirety of this ecosphere,,, why would you think renewables don’t.

The need for an increased reliance on renewable energy regularly surfaces as we try to combat climate change. The latest COP28 agreement spelt it out clearly, calling for a tripling of renewable energy capacity and doubling of energy efficiency improvements by 2030. 🌎🌱✔ It is a bold but necessary ambition to get anywhere close to achieving net zero goals in the timescale needed. A subject that is often overlooked is how best to manage the unpredictability of renewable energy supply. And, when it is discussed, it often focuses on issues at a high level, like grid distribution and national power supplies. However, it can take up to 15 years for expansions to electricity grid transmission and distribution networks to come into effect. Renewable energy has a key role in combating global warming. That is why worldwide renewable energy generation capacity is being ramped up at record rates. China is the absolute leader in installing solar and wind power capacity, but at the same time it is also investing heavily in the construction of coal-fired power plants.
