Recently, my second grader daughter won a bronze in her school's relay race. She was very disappointed not to secure the gold. In trying to console her, I shared my own experiences of winning more bronze and silver medals than gold in sports. What she said next surprised and amused me. She connected her performance to "having my genes" and got even more upset!! Of course, I am aware of the role genes play but did not see it coming in this context!! 😄 On a separate note, it got me thinking how various experiences at workplace mirror the podium - in our careers, just like in sports, the journey often represents a different shade. 1. Bronze moments - These are the times we give our best, contribute to the team, and make a difference - though the spotlight is on others. Recognition may not be immediate, but it comes sooner than later 😊 2. Silver struggles - The classic "So near yet so far". Whether it's being passed over for a promotion, losing a business opportunity in the last stages or not making it through to a dream company in the final round, these experiences, though initially disheartening, become the silver linings in our career. They represent challenges and setbacks that shape resilience and add depth to the narrative of our professional journey. 3. Gold Quest - While the gold is the ultimate goal, it's important to set new milestones and continually challenge ourselves in the workplace. Whether it's achieving a leadership position, spearheading an impactful initiative or exceeding performance targets, these are the moments that define the gold quest and should propel us to achieve more. It is important we embrace the bronze and silver moments in our career as much as the gold quest. After all, multiple winning shades add to the diversity of our experiences and present stories that can inspire others on their own unique journeys. P.S - Last I asked my daughter how she was feeling about the medal, me being optimistic that she would now value this win, she asked me to get a gold paint so that she can color it! Hopeful she would run out of all ideas and come around to cherishing the bronze 😊
Very thought provoking Vineeta Mittal another dimension to ponder on is that ,unlike most parents today ,you are not creating pressure on your child for performance
Such a lovely post Vineeta Mittal :)
So well curated.
Interesting analogy Vineeta Mittal, it brilliantly captures the essence of career experiences! Embracing the bronze and silver moments like the gold ones is crucial in a career journey. Diverse experiences contribute to a rich narrative and become a source of inspiration too.
Incredible reflection!
Well said Vineeta Mittal . Loved every word of it❤️☺️. Children challenge our creative juices to flow..
So beautifully articulated 👌
Insightful! Thanks for sharing Vineeta Mittal painting the bronze medal in gold paint is innovative, she seems only then to value her win. Valuable insights in terms of how one needs to value each moment that we may experience at corporate or otherwise.
Well said
