The recent grounding of the Bahamas-flagged Supramax bulk carrier, Algoma Verity, in the Delaware River serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maritime safety. The incident, which occurred mere miles from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, underscores the challenges of navigating congested waterways. The U.S. Coast Guard's swift response, including the launch of a response boat and the issuance of an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast, highlights the critical role of emergency preparedness in maritime safety. As investigations into the cause continue, the incident calls attention to the need for vigilant navigation and robust safety measures. This event also emphasizes the value of data sharing initiatives in preventing future accidents. By collecting and analyzing data, maritime authorities can identify potential risks and enhance safety protocols. The grounding of the Algoma Verity is not just an isolated incident but a call to action for the entire maritime industry to prioritize safety and preventive measures. #USCoastGuard #MVAlgomaVerity #DelawareRiver #GroundingIncident #SolarSalt #BulkerVessel #SafetyZone #VesselTraffic #PollutionPrevention #MarineAccidentInvestigation Read more on NeonHorizon🔗 https://lnkd.in/dAYpaNzE

A new research paper has revealed that ship strikes (accidental collisions between whales and vessels) are a major driver behind the large number of whale strandings on the US east coast: https://lnkd.in/g_32MbXN The analysis suggests that increased marine traffic in foraging areas used by juvenile humpback whales is leading to a higher risk of ship strikes and associated strandings. Despite speculation that offshore wind development is to blame, there’s currently no evidence of a link between this and the strandings. Sadly, ship strikes remain one of the greatest threats to large whale species. Our online course, ‘Becoming Whale Aware’, is specially developed for professionals in the maritime industry to help reduce the risk of ship strikes. MIT Technology Review: These stunning images trace ships’ routes as they move Publicly available data helps monitor ship traffic to avoid disruption of undersea internet cables, identify whale strikes, and study the footprint of underwater noise. “Global Fishing Watch is an international nonprofit that uses AIS to monitor the fishing industry, seeking to protect marine life from overfishing. But it says that only 2% of fishing vessels use AIS transmitters.” By Jon Keegan https://lnkd.in/gZaHzFtS #technology #humanity

Keeping our eyes on this situation in the Bering Sea, part of the U.S. Arctic. Appreciate all the close coordination between the operators, Coast Guard, emergency tug services, and others. Worth noting the proactive actions being taken, including the hoist of non-essential personnel. Prudent to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. That being said, it is a reminder of the particular hazards of the region and the limited response resources, especially when dealing with severe weather common to the region. https://lnkd.in/e-tyiZau
