It’s Friday …. Yay ! Thought we’d do something military today. No matter what anyone says we believe the A11 watch manufactured jointly in WW2 by Waltham, Elgin & Bulova was the first what has now become known as a Field Watch. However there were a number of iterations of the A11, so you will find A11s in the European Theatre with both the USAAF and a variation with the RAF, the model,shown here is rarer as it’s a FSSC-88-W-800 which denotes a US Navy pilots watch. As most of the war with Japan involved infantry and the US Navy and was fought in the Pacific over large stretches of water and small Islands so most US Navy pilots operated from Flat Top Aircraft Carriers or were based at Pearl Harbour. If only watches could talk this could tell a story we’re sure ! Todays watch is a tad rare … Dating to around 1953 this is a Gruen Precision Gents Mystery Watch, the 1950’s saw a number of brands produce Mystery Watches including Jaeger Le Coultre, Longines, Vulcain, Bulova ,Elgin and others but most date from the mid to late 1950’s, the question is did Gruen steal a march on the other brands or not, not sure we’ll ever know definitively but it’s a really nice looking watch whatever the answer ! A military start to the week In 1944 the British Ministry of Defence ordered a quantity of watches from 12 Swiss Watch Manufacturers, these included JLC, Omega, Longines IWC, Cyma, Eterna and others, they were to be produced to rigorous standards as set by the MOD, however with the war finishing a year later the production ceased. These watches are now iconically known as The Dirty Dozen. Deliveries of some of the watches arriving in 1945 never saw action. Not that well known, Rodana was a Swiss brand founded in 1930 in Grenchen, a decade for ‘judicial’ reasons the brand was renamed Rodania and is still produced today under that name.
