Long-duration #humanspaceflight beyond low-Earth orbit is not as esoteric as it might seem. There is reciprocal #knowledgetransfer and #technologytransfer with some of our most stubborn problems of life on Earth: (1) Radical innovation in thinking and action that can put humanity on a trajectory toward "closing the loop" for a #circulareconomy that enables humanity to evolve beyond the singular achievement of generating #waste that is otherwise is a non sequitur in nature. (2) Truly #personalizedhealthcare far beyond the reach of tertiary care at the pace and place of a individual's life--of necessity, over long time scales in which the purposes of life are pursued--within a #teamofteams supported by a #systemofsystems for #riskinformeddecisionmaking by a diversity of stakeholders. Human spaceflight conspicuously shows that "big hairy audacious goals" can motivate ostensibly narrow groups of scientists and entrepreneurs to break out of the box of status quo notions that conflate efficiency with efficacy. For generations, it has motivated individuals to do things outside of spaceflight that they otherwise would not have had the imagination or courage to consider.

Y’all we are launching a satellite! 🚀 But what’s really important is the instrument on board Tanager-1. 🛰️ It will be able to detect methane and CO2 emissions around the globe—and attribute them to facilities and sometimes even pieces of equipment. 👀 The best part is that all of this data will be publicly available (shout out to our incredibly user friendly data portal linked in the comments). 👩🏽💻 The goal is to help drive reductions and support mitigation efforts with actionable and accessible data. Especially when it comes to methane and its big warming impacts, it’s really important to identify large emissions and take actions based on science and data. #ClimateComms #EmissionsData

Tanager-1 is at Vandenberg Space Force Base in preparation for its launch as early as July! 🚀 This is the first of two satellites being developed and deployed by Planet and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory through the Carbon Mapper Coalition, a philanthropically-funded partnership led by Carbon Mapper. 🛰 Tanager-1 is designed and optimized to detect methane and CO2 super-emitters from space. Its observations will help Carbon Mapper generate data and insights to fill gaps in society’s current understanding of human-caused emissions at specific sources so they can be stopped.
