Signalling power supplies are known to be safety-critical assets. Yet, planning and executing maintenance can be challenging, especially in difficult locations. Despite this challenge, compliance with standards and ensuring safety and operational efficiency remain essential. Installing CableGuardian can eliminate the need for manual cable testing, sparing staff from risky trackside work. The CableGuardian technology also enhances safety and detects cable damage early, allowing for targeted asset replacement and protecting budgets for future control periods. A specific Network Rail region had consistently recorded low insulation resistance (IR) values within the intelligent infrastructure system. However, the causes of the low network IR values were not immediately apparent. Traditionally, identifying the cause involves disconnecting and testing each cable section, but a different approach was taken. ✅Instead of using the traditional method, which involves disconnecting and testing each Cable section, a different approach was taken to install CableGuardian in a Tier 2 configuration, with individual units monitoring each feeder. ✅This setup provided E&P engineers with individual IR measurements from the CableGuardian hardware rather than a single network IR value. ✅The data from CableGuardian surprisingly revealed that the issue was located in the relay room rather than the feeders, eliminating the need to obtain possession, put ‘boots on ballast,’ and test feeder cables only to discover that the problem was elsewhere. Using CableGuardian, Network Rail pinpointed the root cause of low IR values within the infrastructure and spared extensive operational disruptions and resources that would have been otherwise required. Calculations show that significant savings can be made in maintenance costs by the expanded use of Tier 2 and Tier 1 IMDs, running to tens of millions of pounds for each delivery unit throughout the asset lifecycle. Choosing CableGuardian as your Insulation Monitoring Device offers comprehensive detection of failure modes, including joint issues, resistance problems, and insulation degradation. It also monitors voltage, current and volt drop, identifying power supply irregularities like sags, swells, and overcurrent. One of the reasons why our clients recommend CableGuardian is because our product is not only efficient but also helps to achieve significant savings in maintenance costs. We have clients saying ‘The CableGuardian units we have installed so far are already proving their worth and have helped to proactively identify system issues before they become service affecting. The system’s capability has allowed us to amend our maintenance practices and, in the future, once fully deployed, fundamentally change the way that we manage and renew our 650V lineside power assets.’ Learn more about CableGuardian here- https://ow.ly/Y5ek50Q9kOf . . #rail #railway #networkrail #railwaysystems

In January 2022, Viper’s Engineers helped a local maintenance team install a CableGuardian unit along a feeder with low insulation resistance based on Tier 2 data trends. This gave the Network Rail Engineers access to the CableGuardian web portal, which allowed them to monitor insulation resistance in real-time. ✅ The data recorded on the CableGuardian portal indicated a value of 0.55MΩ for a specific cable section, much lower than expected. ✅ After isolating the cable, a manual test confirmed the CableGuardian unit’s measurement. ✅ The faulty cable was left isolated as it was supplying up to an open point at the end of a dual end fed system. Once isolated, the local insulation resistance on the feeder increased to >10MΩ. This proactive monitoring by CableGuardian and early intervention by Network Rail’s maintenance team demonstrate the effectiveness of the CableGuardian unit and CableGuardian system in preventing signalling power supply failures. 📢New industry milestone on the East Coast Digital Programme!! Thank you to the 500+ individuals that all played a crucial part in safely delivering critical works during the 97-hour blockade at Welwyn to Hitchin which began on Saturday 17th February and was returned back at 03:13am Wednesday 21st February 🙌 This blockade saw the final changeover of existing assets to Siemens Westrace Trackside System (WTS) equipment followed by final testing and commissioning of the new infrastructure. Three new interlockings replace life expired legacy equipment controlling 252 Signalling Equivalent Units (SEU). Modifications were also made to equipment at the following fringes: Biggleswade, Hertford, Letchworth, and Hatfield. The next phase of the infrastructure program is the start of testing and validation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) which will realise cost, environmental and improved reliability benefits to the railway. Once approved, an estimated 3,000 drivers shall be trained in the use of in-cab signalling, removing the need to install any new signals during further renewals along the route. Train speeds will be continuously monitored improving safety for all rail users 🚄 For more information on these works and the East Coast Digital Programme please click the link below 👇 https://lnkd.in/en4hpsS6 #digitalsignalling #nextgenerationrailway #eastcoastmainline

So how do we connect the old to the new?
Connecting the old to the new When it comes to new cable projects, our focus is always on the latest technology and on sustainable solutions. But many of the cables powering major cities have been in use for over half a century. With regular maintenance, they can still operate for years to come. So rather than replacing them entirely, we extend their life by connecting these legacy cables to modern XLPE systems. So how do we connect the old to the new? We've got the expertise to make it happen with minimal tools and maximum efficiency. And most important: It can be done section by section - avoiding the need for a complete replacement. We develop these solutions together in close cooperation with our customers, ensuring fast and economical installation of transition technologies. As you can see, keeping the grid modern doesn’t mean starting from scratch—it means building smarter. Contact us if you want to learn more on our cable accessories for legacy cable systems and how they enable a reliable and cost-efficient transition technology to XLPE cables. #NKT #cableservices #maintenance #legacycables #ogccc #energytransition
