Since space tourism restarted in 2021 approx. 20 astronauts per year have been going into space (primarily sub-orbital) However with Virgin Galactic now operating monthly flights & plans in the future for weekly flights along with Blue Origin and a number of other companies we could see in the next five years many hundreds of 'astronaut tourists' per year.   Blue Abyss is building the world’s first commercial astronaut training centres in Cleveland, Ohio and Cornwall, UK which will include the world’s largest deep-water pool at 42,000m3, along with high g simulation and parabolic flight facilities. These centres will support training of astronauts for sub-orbital & orbital space, lunar missions, governments as well as provide experiential space courses as the world expands into space. The challenge lies in bridging political boundaries and aligning institutions to work together. OTD in 1969 the lunar module (Snoopy) for the Apollo 10 mission came within 7.8 nautical miles of the lunar surface during a full dress rehearsal for the upcoming Apollo 11 mission. Aviation legends Gene Cernan, Tom Stafford, and John Young were the astronauts on this mission. All 3 have been recognized for their achievements by the National Aeronautic Association. Gene Cernan and Tom Stafford are recipients of the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy (2007 and 2011 respectively). John Young as part of STS-1 and the development of the space shuttle in 1981 received recognition as a Collier recipient. Some fun facts about Apollo 10 and the crew: ✨ Snoopy's approach to the moon was the closest approach before the actual landing by Apollo 11 ✨ Apollo 10 was the first mission to broadcast color television signal from space ✨ Apollo 10 set the record for the highest speed ever reached by a manned vehicle. The spacecraft hit 24,791 mph during its return to Earth. ✨ John Young holds the current ratified FAI record for duration of stay on the surface of the celestial body at 71 h 02 min 13 sec (Apollo 16) ✨ Eugene Cernan is the last person to walk on the moon and holds the current ratified FAI record for distance covered on board a vehicle on the surface of the celestial body at 4.5 miles and extravehicular duration on the surface of the celestial body by an astronaut at 21 h 31 min 44 sec (Apollo 17 mission) Do you know an aviation pioneer and legend? July 17th is my birthday. How do we celebrate on our birthday? We celebrate as we live. For me, that has meant continued advocacy for the democratization of access to space in commercial astronautics, especially through ongoing education and research in space medicine, spending time with family & friends, (still) living out of a suitcase and maintaining a relentless travel schedule, working out (of course), and lots of dark chocolate an caffeine (double of course), and of course, being humbled by a demanding, yet tiny, feisty little green parrot (this will never change). There is a lot going on in the world today, and there are a lot of fractures in how we relate to one another, but there are also a lot of opportunities for fostering collaboration and understanding, by embarking on really big challenges, together, across disciplines and across borders.
