What's the longest time you've stayed at the same company? How about the FIFTY year career! Listening to my demographically appropriate radio station yesterday morning, it turned out that the lovely Sports presenter was retiring after FIFTY years at the BBC. It got me thinking about all sorts of things, but mainly what does it take to work at the same company for 50 years? The short answer is lots of things, but I think it boils down to some fundamentals. Values Respect and Trust Open Communication It's important for both the employee and the company to be on the same page when it comes to values and goals. When there's mutual respect and trust, it builds strong, long-lasting teamwork and loyalty. And lastly, open and honest communication helps tackle issues and keeps the work environment positive. Happy retirement Garry Richardson and if you want to hear his thoughts and the lovely tribute the Today programme put together, listen from 2.45.30. https://lnkd.in/epDiCPcv #ex #employeeexperience #longevity #relationships

CEO & Founder DSM Productions. Delivering the very best in event production and technology - Corporate | Touring | Motorsport
As another busy week draws to a close, I’ve had the chance to stop and think this afternoon: being in business is a bloody scary place - it can also be a very lonely place too. The last couple of months has taken its toll - moving into new premises whilst delivering even more events has pushed me to the limit… but don’t worry, the annual Smith holiday is upon me so that gives me time to relax and spend some quality family time ahead of a busy festival season. Unfortunately, one of the biggest mental challenges has been battling a debt and we’ve had to instruct our solicitors to start court action against a pretty large unpaid bill from 2023, a decision that hasn’t been made lightly but one that is necessary. The job was a white label job, for another company, that I had to lay out a fair chunk of money to do and we delivered above the end client’s expectations - so why shouldn’t we get paid? I’ve paid all of our suppliers and the crew but I’ve yet to be paid myself… This has put extra pressure on the business but I’ve taken a step back to look at what has been acheived in the last 7 years. • A company that has survived a global pandemic and operates at a healthy margin • A reputation for reliability and delivery • Incredible feedback from clients - knowing that we continue to deliver excellence • Another fantastic year And, of course… the chance to work with some brilliant people. If the road ahead looks rough, just remember what you’ve already acheived. One final thought; LinkedIn, and business as a whole, is a lot like dating & getting a cold call message is very much like getting a nuddy picture sent to you - at least buy me a drink before you send me the proposals 👌 Wishing you all a very lovely weekend 🍻

Heading to USITT (US Institute for Theatre Technology) in a few weeks and I queried a group of seasoned working professionals "If you were just starting out today, knowing what you know now, what would you tell your younger self? Any tips or words of wisdom to pass along to your younger self"? They offered great tips for students just starting out as well as going to their first conference. These are good reminders (or new reminders) for all of us. What tips would you add? ~ Don’t let other people define what success is for you. You don’t have to work on Broadway if that’s not your thing. Success is finding what makes you happy in life. ~ Never disparage anyone. This is a small business. ~ Never. Give. Up. ~ You are only as good as your last gig. Approach each gig with fresh eyes and bring experience but not attitude. ~ Don’t worry about being labelled an electrician instead of lighting designer ~ Corporate gigs pay well it’s not “selling out” ~ Take the cruise ship gig ~ Learn Auto CAD ~ Wear comfortable shoes and change them half way through the day. (Tom Hanks tip for 10 hour days on set) ~Take ALL the business cards. You never know which one of them is the connection to your next job. Make a note on the back about what you chatted about or a detail about the person. ~ Network! Meet as many new-to-you people as possible. From peers at other schools to trade show reps to educators. Each one is a connection that may play a role in your future success. ~ Drink water, take Emergen-C, wash your hands/use sanitizer, and get some sleep. Your next day and post-show you will thank you. ~Think outside the box about your future in technical theatre. Not all jobs are in a theatre and your skills are transferable to many different industries. Learn to pivot. ~ Use the conference app to bookmark sessions you want to attend. Dedicate a solid hour sometime ahead of the conference to scroll through the offerings. You may not get to every single one but at least this will give you some structure to plan around. ~ Make sure you have a decent amount of space in your luggage for any “swag” you accumulate. ~ Enter ALL THE GIVEAWAYS/RAFFLES. Worst case, you end up on a few email lists you can unsubscribe from in a few weeks if you want. However, a lot of companies give away some very valuable gear/software/swag at the conference so it can’t hurt to try! ~ If you are usually an introvert like me, try and find a space where you can recharge your social battery a bit throughout the day, away from the overload of the expo floor. For some, this may be a coffee shop down the block, an unoccupied area of the conference center, or a bench outside. Share your tips for success in the comments 👇 https://lnkd.in/gJVrZ_Dr

🟪While we can all cook at home, that doesn’t mean we can work as chefs. 👉The same applies to communication. 🔻Having a lax communication policy can lead to chaos and inefficiency within an organisation. 🟢Effective communication requires clear guidelines, consistent implementation, and ongoing refinement. 🔻Neglecting communication policies can result in misunderstandings, conflicts, and missed opportunities, much like serving up a poorly executed dish in a bustling restaurant. Unfortunately, we’re witnessing a similar scenario in the British Crown—⚠️a stark reminder for many companies that entrusting their communication to inexperienced hands can have dire consequences.” #communication #marketing
A Royal Masterclass In Bad Communication : Budget is Meaningless. In case you've been living under a rock, there are many things happening in The Royal Family. The one in UK, that is. The disappearance of this woman for Months led to a WORLDWIDE audience to think she was: -Abduced by Aliens. -Cloned. -Killed. -Killed and Cloned. -Abduced by Aliens and Cloned. -Being sick with some disease. One would think that an institution such as The Crown (yes, the same from that Netflix show) would be able to pay for a good communications team... And the best part of it is: Of course they can, they are Kings and Queens after all. However backlash from how this situation was handled is heard daily. To the point where people don't even believe her latest announcement is true... (People don't even believe its her in the video and claim its AI generated). So... Even if you are paying for communications and marketing, even if you are leaving it to some "specialist" in the field... Are you sure you are in the right hands? Make sure you are being represented and taken care of by people who know their craft. The alternative can make even the biggest of institutions hurt, badly. Tell me your thoughts on the biggest Marketing Fiasco of the century down below, I'm genuinely interested. #UnitedKingdom #Royals #Marketing #KateMiddleton

Time out & being intentional with its use. As challenging as it seems at times, time away recharges your batteries and sharpens your focus. When you’re deep in the hustle and bustle of your day-to-day, you can lose sight of larger goals and priorities — especially those personal goals and objectives that get lost in the daily demands of your responsibilities. Amid the rapid flurry of emails and daily tasks, you may forget what is truly important, and you should not allow immediate but sometimes less important tasks to take over your calendar! Slowing down helps you gain perspective on your career path as well as your life outside of work. These long-term perspectives grow clearer when you step away from your desk. The post below by HBR has come along at a time when I happend to have taken a long weekend to visit Scotland, take in a show & visit some historical sites. Lockdown & COVID put pay to large events like visiting the theatre 🎭 & taking in a show etc. As such, post COVID, you appreciate even more opportunities like this to be back in the thick of social situations, being face to face with others and to share life’s experiences. Pictured is the playhouse in Edinburgh & look closely, you will see those others who are also intentional with their time. Have yourselves a great weekend.

Commercially savvy, B Corp experienced marketing communications leader. Keen to help businesses with good at their heart by supporting leaders create a positive impact and reputation.
Six months into a new life! We took a huge decision early in 2023 to find as positive a way as we could to wind up my previous award winning business, Siren Comms and to end 20+ years of working for big brand clients in the tough London agency environment. Instead of slowly killing ourselves, we took a huge decision to step bravely into a new life, free of onerous responsibility, debt and the city. None of those decisions were easy, and all were tinged with mixed feelings of disappointment and some sadness, but we had to make positive change from where we were. We are now 6 months into F4G and 2 months into a new home and life in Newquay Cornwall. Its good- better than we imagined or hoped. Its hasn’t been easy and remains very new and careful as we make sure not to recreate what was before and to embrace all the opportunity this new world offers us. We are blessed with strong and supportive friends and some incredibly kind clients who have offered us work and consistency. A team that has worked hard to support this significant transition being swan-like as we have paddled furiously below the surface, whilst remaining mostly composed above the surface. And importantly not allowing me or each other to sink. We are gradually building a client portfolio who pay us fairly and value our work as we learn how best to commercialise what we offer. It’s very much a begin again and requires constant self-management and an open outlook and heart. There isn’t much our family hasn’t been through over the last 5 years, since COVID hit like a 10-tonne truck, but we have survived and hope to build to a point of thrive again by the end of this year. A debt of thanks is owed to our team, old and new to our loyal friends (personal and business) and our families who have held us and understood as we have navigated into this new place and to our clients who have been consistent and brave enough to support a small start-up, led by a 50+ comms person, starting over. Thank you to you all. We are beginning to bounce back.
