Is this sustainable in today's cutthroat market, or is it the key to long-term success?  4. Kaufman's "Five Aces" for money managers include "operating in an uncrowded space." In CRE, where are these uncrowded spaces? Are we all chasing the same deals?  5. "Where there is mystery, there is margin." Provocative statement. But in an age of data and transparency, is there still room for mystery in CRE?  6. He advocates for "non-numeric, people-based goals." This week felt like the ultimate game of musical chairs between business and family. Before kids and family, I had strict block scheduling and full control over my calendar. Family taught me flexibility, and now I don’t block schedule anymore—maybe one day I’ll get back to it. Things come up, the week gets reshuffled, and we move forward. Family comes first: I’ll reschedule client calls if my kids need me at an event. Business is next: Website clients and prospect calls take priority over virtual and networking calls, though I try to balance them. Virtual coffees (VCs) are last: I aim for one in-person coffee a month, and recently it’s been focused on internal VCs with SCN visitors. Some days, though, I get so overloaded I don’t even know which day it is. On Wednesday, when I had a cold, my son lovingly gave me, I sat in an empty Zoom room until I realized it wasn’t Thursday. All-in-all, I won this round of musical chairs. My husband went to the kids Christmas parties (it's my least favorite school event of the year). All client projects are coming to an end and moving forward - after the elections, it seemed like everyone was serious about getting back to work. And we raised $1750 for Angels of American Fallen at the SCN Christmas Happy Hour. I'll take the wins and learn from the rest. Life doesn’t always go as planned, but prioritizing what matters most keeps everything moving forward.

The Sky Zero Footprint Fund: ‘Local Heroes’ aims to reward businesses that are committed to a more sustainable future in their community. The scheme will support those businesses by giving them a platform to grow their operations and spread their sustainable message through local TV advertising campaigns, with AdSmart from Sky. Local Heroes will be awarding nine businesses from different regions of the UK and Ireland £20,000/€20,000 of media value to spend on a TV campaign to advertise in their local area. Winners will also receive up to £2,500/€2,500 towards ad creation from a local production agency. Applications are open to small businesses in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland, with 500 employees or fewer. Businesses must have been trading for longer than 12 months at the time of entry (ie no start-ups) and must have a product or service readily available at the time of the entry. The winning businesses will have: Demonstrated sustainability credentials through tangible changes in business operations and/or by offering sustainable options to customers. Created a product or service capable of driving green consumer behaviour within their local community. Made significant strides in becoming a more sustainable business. Last Thursday we were invited to attend the Unseen UK Business Awards 2024 as one of the nominees in the Business Impact category. If you don’t know about Unseen UK they have been at the forefront of combating modern slavery in the UK for many years and are the people behind the Modern Slavery helpline. They rock! It was an honour to be nominated and also a privilege to be asked to contribute as one of the guest speakers for the evening. Due to pressing issues at home I was unable to attend and so I sent this video message instead. However, Nick (director) and Sarah (marketing ninja) were both able to attend, which is a good thing because we only went and won the jolly thing! It’s all a bit crazy and proper humbling. We NEVER started out on this coffee roasting adventure to win awards or gain recognition. We simply wanted to help survivors of slavery to recover hope, restore confidence and rebuild their lives. And by the grace of God that’s what we’ve seen happen time and time and time again. Sure, we’d like to think that our commitment to Ethical Sourcing, Compassionate Employment and Strategic Investment will make a positive impact in the lives of people from crop to cup (and even cause a few ripples in the wider coffee industry too). And we know that our vision to create a workplace in which our staff are constantly reminded that 1. You are safe; 2. You are precious; 3. You are free to dream – is a good one. And we know that employing someone (the wonderful Sophie) in a pastoral role to care for the women has been fantastically beneficial to our team. But we never did any of that to catch the eye of the movers and shakers in the anti-slavery sector or the coffee industry. We did it because that’s how we felt called and compelled to both do business and fight slavery. While it’s lovely to hold this trophy in our hands, I have to say that the joyful giggles that fill our roastery each week, the stories of past and present employees whose lives took a turn for the better through working at Manumit, and yes – people like you who buy and enjoy our coffee – these will always be the sweetest reward for us.
