Virginia Tech is leading in semiconductor education and innovation, go Hokies! "Virginia Tech faculty Yang (Cindy) Yi and Luke Lester are taking on the challenge to bring more women into technology and semiconductor industries through UPWARDS, an international partnership between the U.S. and Japan. According to the 2022 semiconductor gender parity study from the Global Semiconductor Alliance, women make up only 20 to 25 percent of the semiconductor workforce. VT is dedicated to increasing that number through the U.S.-Japan University Partnership for Workforce Advancement and Research & Development in Semiconductors, also known as UPWARDS for the Future. The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is instrumental in the overall effort. “The Arizona Commerce Authority in November awarded the College of Engineering $35.5 million to expand the college's Micro/Nano Fabrication Center. The funding also is helping expand training opportunities in Arizona to meet the industry's workforce needs. Semiconductors, tiny computer chips used in all electronics, have become central to modern life. But the semiconductor manufacturing industry has only a few large and notable manufacturers and its workforce is not keeping pace with demand. Governments around the world have rapidly rolled out incentive programs to boost semiconductor manufacturing. The College of Engineering at Oregon State University has been central to the semiconductor industry ever since the Silicon Forest first took root, back in the 1970s. Last year, the college further extended its leadership role in this vital industry, with awards for three high-profile, federally funded initiatives aimed at innovations to grow the semiconductor workforce in Oregon and throughout the region. → Oregon State was selected to lead a federally designated Tech Hub focused on developing microfluidic technology for semiconductors, materials, and biotechnology, with eligibility to apply for future awards of $40 million to $70 million. → The National Science Foundation selected Oregon State to spearhead a $2 million effort exploring ways to help electrical components better withstand extreme operating conditions. → The university was named a partner institution for the $15.3 million California-Pacific Northwest AI hardware hub, which aims to accelerate new semiconductor technologies. Leading teams at Oregon State for all three projects as principal investigator is Tom Weller, the Michael and Judith Gaulke Chair in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “We expect that investment will yield some impressive returns — not just in developing better technology, but in creating jobs for Oregon, expanding the technology sector in the Northwest, and strengthening the economy of the United States,” said @Tom Weller. "NSF and DOC will select an institution of higher education, nonprofit organization, or group of such institutions and organizations to establish and operate the Network Coordination Hub. The Hub will be responsible for coordinating a coalition of regional consortia, each with its own programs and centers, to offer consistent, rigorous, engaging curricula, instructional materials, experiential opportunities, teacher professional development and more throughout the U.S. NSF will lead the solicitation process and, upon its establishment, serve as the primary federal manager of the Network Coordination Hub, working with the Hub to establish regional nodes and other activities that will form the network. As specified in the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, the NNME is envisioned as an up to $200 million investment in the next generation of talent, spanning the full range of jobs and levels, necessary for the long-term success of the U.S. semiconductor and microelectronics industry."

Semiconductors are as essential as water, sunlight and air to supporting modern life as we know it.
