Did you know that less than half of the qualified people that pass don't use a substantial healthcare service available to them? 🏥 Hospice care is a crucial support system for individuals with life-limiting illnesses, providing comfort and dignity during their final stages. I do my best to use this forum to educate readers about the facts and myths surrounding hospice care. This week, I will keep it short and sweet. Chances are your healthcare provider has never had a conversation about advance care planning with you (a real conversation - not a perfunctory chat). I'm one of the fortunate ones - my PCP has brought it up at every annual physical. She knows my documents are in place- but always asks if anything has changed or if I need to discuss it further. Here is my advice - If your healthcare provider has not had the conversation with you ( no matter your age or health status) -YOU need to initiate the conversation at your next visit. My healthcare proxy and power of attorney know that if I am facing a life-limiting illness - I want to receive hospice care. It's plainly stated in my advance directive documents and has been discussed and understood by them. You may have a will - but a will isn't sufficient. A will is used to distribute assets after you die, while an advance directive provides instructions for medical care if you are unable to communicate your wishes. So don't put it off any longer! Have those conversations, choose a health care proxy that you trust, and make your own choices known so your wishes are documented. Planning is a gift that you give yourself and your loved ones. You'll sleep better once you stop procrastinating. Tomorrow is promised to no one. #healthcareproxy #advancedirectives #hospice
