We've spent almost 30 years (so far) perfecting our highly controlled burnishing processes. Just a few years after we obtained our first patents for low plasticity burnishing, we wrote this paper with the NASA Glenn Research Center titled, "FOD Resistance and Fatigue Crack Arrest in Low Plasticity Burnished IN718." This paper may be "old," but the research is still relevant and the science is still applied to many applications today. Read the full text to learn how to improve the fatigue and FOD tolerance of superalloy components. Link in comments. #superalloy #NASA #aerospaceengineering

An Optica Quantum [#OPG_OpticaQ] study demonstrates a 4.09-GHz repetition rate source of photon pairs entangled across early and late time bins separated by 80 ps: https://ow.ly/eyQP50RztKI The research team from Caltech and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory resolves the density matrices of the entangled states for each multiplexed channel and expresses distillable entanglement rates in ebit/s. The source serves as a building block for high-rate entanglement-based quantum key distribution systems. Written by: Andrew Mueller, Samantha I. Davis, Boris Korzh, Raju Valivarthi, Andrew D. Are you a small business with big ideas? If so, the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program could be your game-changer. At SightLine Ventures, we're dedicated to helping you navigate this powerful funding opportunity. Here’s why you should pay attention: Massive Budget: The STTR program taps into 0.45% of the federal extramural research budget from giants like DOD, NIH, DOE, NASA, and NSF. That’s a whopping $450 million up for grabs each year! Higher Success Rates: Our clients see significantly higher chances of securing funding compared to other programs. One of the next challenges in astrobiology is to search for life on icy ocean worlds in the Solar System, such as Europa and Enceladus. In fact, both exhibit strong evidence of the presence of liquid oceans beneath kilometers of icy crust. Reaching the liquid part poses an extreme engineering challenge. One interesting idea is to design a cryobot powered by a nuclear system that, thanks to the heat generated, can dig down like a worm into the ice. Currently, the cryobot is merely an idea, but it provides ample food for thought and once again highlights the difficulty and pioneering nature of space exploration. For more details on this incredible idea, you can visit the following link: https://lnkd.in/dS27mgiD #astrobiology #lifedetection@GT #NASA #ESA

I just attended my first International Electric Propulsion Conference – #IEPC2024! For me, some especially notable things; - Most spacecraft now use Electric Propulsion. Even ‘high power’ (5+ kW) is becoming common. Will Starship change this? Probably there’ll be even more use for EP in that future. - There are plenty of research challenges to solve; for example (and vastly oversimplifying it) alternative propellants, predictive simulation. - Fusion-propulsion is science (and awesome, see e.g. Helicity Space). Yes, engineering and system challenges, but it could be for our life times. Great to be there with my colleagues from Paihau-Robinson Research Institute, Jakub Glowacki and Jamal Olatunji.

International team captures first clear evidence of compounds impact on aerosol development in air we breathe. Led by Argonne, Sandia National Laboratories, and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the multi-institutional team wanted to investigate a class of compounds called Criegee intermediates. These compounds have long been thought to have effects on the radiation balance and air quality in the Earth's inner atmosphere. Through field measurements taken in the Amazon rainforest, researchers think that Criegee intermediate chemistry could be driving more transformation in the troposphere than previously thought. That, or other, yet unidentified chemical mechanisms, are at work - https://bit.ly/43hvqr1
