11 years in the insurance industry. Hundreds of phone calls weekly, thousands of emails, texts, in-person appointments, networking and so much time trying to grow a book, finally in my rear-view mirror. I’m one of those people that admittedly have a hard time watching others enjoy businesses based on their passions in life. I’ve always longed for that opportunity and over the past year got closer than ever, to making that dream come true. Unfortunately, there were setbacks, which led to a failure to agree to terms on a deal I put my heart and soul into, for over a year! I was ready to operate a vertical business, create brands and nurture its growth. I could have dug back into insurance giving it my all, but my heart was no longer there. Cannabis had it for good and there would be no shaking that feeling. Time to turn the setback into opportunity! I’m proud to announce the creation of a unique business in the cannabis-space, The Dab Hut. The focus will be on helping grow accessory revenue through partnerships in the local Michigan market. We’ll be offering our own unique combustion-free devices and help managing inventory, provide training and on-site demonstrations. Selling vs Informing I am a sales purist in rehab. What do I mean? I was brought up in my dads supermarket. I was taught from a young age to upsell and cross sell. Would like some garlic butter with the prawns? Do you have foil, charcoal and firelighters? Some customers got irritated and some bought what was suggested to them. I carried that same model into B2B sales. Whether I was selling life insurance, SaaS products or business coaching services, I used the same selling technique I used in my dads store and I got the same reaction from my potential clients. Some bought others and got irritated. Enter my wife, scientist by training, business woman by choice. Her closing rate was better than mine. So I sat in on some meetings where she ran point, I was riding shotgun. She had a simple approach that was about informing the client of what she was offering. Just the facts, no fluff, no hard sell, no pressure selling or ABC strategy (Always Be Closing). I watched in awe as the potential clients felt open to ask questions and they were not in a hurry to get off the call. Sales training taught me if they are asking questions then you are on the right track. She either closed the client on the call or they got back to her and asked to do business with us. She came across as genuine and honest. This helped her form long lasting relationships. There were natural cross sells and upsells that materialised based on the trust the client had in her. So therefore I am a purist in rehab…my approach of always be closing, looking for an angle or cross selling and upselling is fast being replaced by informing the client of the benefits and leaving the door open for the client to decide in a non pressurized environment. You always insure your most prized possessions. A house. A car. An arm if you are a professional baseball pitcher. A sales rep. ? A sales rep? Yes. A sales rep. You have to ensure that they are successful. If this is the 40th sales team member, maybe you can take a chance. If this is one of the first 5 sales team members, it is a special person. A high value person. You want to make sure it works out. The best way to make your sales person successful, assuming that the right skills are present, is training. Onboarding is made of two elements : Providing new information in the new employee and training the new employee. The new information is the health plan, the expense policy, who our travel provider is. Training is teaching a new hire our market and product positioning; competitive knowledge; how to create value for our clients; best practices of our existing base; how to maximize value by leveraging specific members of our teams in different scenarios; presentations certifications. That partial list, is your insurance policy to one of your key asset if you are a small company. And yet, many organizations big and small, will forego the insurance and just have their account executive “shadow Bobby for a day or two and start selling”. There is no cutting corners in sales. From recruiting, hiring, onboarding or coaching and managing…If you want your sales to perform, you put the insurance policy in place and train them properly. #sales #salesonboarding #salesrecruiting #salescoaching
