For years I'd ignored... a book because I didn't think it had any relevance to my research. It is, lightly edited, the "personal recollections" of Sgt. John A. Porter who served in Co. B, 76th Regt., PA Volunteer Infantry (1861-1865). My great-grandfather (Joseph Evans) had served in Co. K. Due to a lack of knowledge about military configurations, I had no idea that Co. B AND Co. K served at the same time and participated in the same battles. Recently I had an opportunity to visit the GAR Museum in Philadelphia and speak with the archivists. Once again I was directed to this book. What made me want to get a copy? Learning that the two companies didn't serve consecutively (one being depleted or withdrawn and others formed to replace earlier ones), but that they served concurrently! No one had mentioned this to me in the past and I'm sure that I had pointed out the difference in companies. As it turns out, this may be as close to a "Regimental History" as one gets for the 76th Regt. PVI. Yes, Bates has the list of battles, servicemen and "outlines" it movements. Porter provides (as I like to say) the "grunts" perspective. "Conversation" can be so important when doing a job. Between hearing what others are talking about (and learning from them), as well as the tangents they can take resulting in "Ah Ha!" moments. It may takes years and, definitely, speaking with the right people. Luckily, before it was too late, I learned the value of Porter's work and Chisman's compilation of it. https://lnkd.in/eVdyutqV

Author, Master Gardener, Vacation Rehab and Rental Addict at Sea Schells Vacation Rentals; Wife, Mother (4), Grandmother (12)
This article is written by Lt Col Stuart Scheller, our oldest son. Well written, thought provoking and timely. August 26, 2001 will be forever etched in many of OUR minds, but unfortunately already forgotten or ignored by others. As evidenced by the most recent debate, our fallen were not even counted during this term by our sitting President. This horrifically disastrously planned withdrawal is a prime example, like no other as to why we need reform in our Military. As a gardener, a planner and someone who looks to today but plans for tomorrow, I am making an analogy . The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now! I plan to plant a Pecan tree now, nurture it and help it to stand tall and produce fruit for the next 300-400 years. Not for my enjoyment, I may never live to see it Produce fruit. But I may be able to bask in its glory and shade in my old age. I will rest in peace with the knowledge that perhaps my tree can provide sustenance for the future generations. Likewise the best time for reform in our Military was 20 years ago, but we have today to make the pruning, grafting and if necessary plant newer deeper roots for the sustenance of tomorrow. Those of us Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, Vets and current enlisted need to stand behind this effort to reform our beloved Military. Who do you support and recommend as a new Sec Def? It is time to have this discussion now, to prepare for a new Commander and Chief to pave the way. We have made our voices heard before, add your voice to the fray. Our Military needs a strong leader to guide it into the next century. https://lnkd.in/ewQUUfah

Maximizing Productivity | Bootstrapping my own Portfolio Career | 100s of jacks-of-all-trades read my newsletter.
One thing I struggle hardcore with: saying no. How the f**k do you do this gracefully? No idea. So I did some research … The first issue in setting boundaries and saying no is how you value your time. - If you value your time at $10/hour, it’s easy to give away. - If you value your time at $5000/hour, it’s almost impossible to say yes. (h/t to Naval Ravikant) - Once you have a valuation of your time that is ridiculously high, you still need to say no without pissing others off. Fortunately, there are good ways to do this. In tomorrow’s newsletter, I will share three ways to say no gracefully, including examples from Danny Meyer, Wendy McNaughton, Neal Stephenson & Daniel Kahneman.
