Kudos and thank you to VNA's Commissioner on Nursing Practice Mesha Jones, MSN, RN, who alongside Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, Ph.D., MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, President of the American Nurses Association, and many other registered nurses recently advocated for nurses at ANA's 2023 Hill Day! Among the crucial legislative issues supported by the ANA is the I CAN ACT, aiming to allow healthcare providers, beside physicians, to offer specific services under Medicare and Medicaid. The proposed bill has three key provisions: (1) enabling nurse practitioners or physician assistants to meet documentation requirements for Medicare coverage of special shoes for diabetic individuals; (2) streamlining the supervision capabilities of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists for Medicare cardiac, intensive cardiac, and pulmonary rehabilitation programs; and (3) granting nurse practitioners the authority to certify the need for inpatient hospital services under both Medicare and Medicaid.

'Those people aren’t smart enough to be trusted...' Last year, at a gathering of fellow nurses, someone directed that statement at me. We were convened to learn how to educate and empower Ohio nurses in shaping state policy and legislation. Amid discussions on tackling the staffing crisis, I delved into the role and potential of Medication Aides (MA-Cs) in Ohio's acute care facilities. A bit of context: In 2006, non-nurses were authorized to administer certain medications in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential care facilities. What began as a pilot program soon expanded statewide by 2009. Yet, since then, progress in reevaluating and expanding the scope of medication aides has stagnated. All that said, the current staffing shortage is much more nuanced than numbers. Its complexities cannot be solved with such a narrow solution. Still, I proposed exploring tangible, quick-turnaround solutions to gauge their impact on acute care. After presenting this idea, I was pulled aside and told “It’s a great idea but won’t work. Those people aren’t smart enough to be trusted with our patients.” Do we assess patients' value based on age or their care setting? This incident showed me we still have a long ways to go in nursing. It shed light on a prevailing mindset for some nurses—a mindset entrenched in outdated paradigms, viewing the world through cracked lenses and taped bridges, desperately clinging to keep them together. It’s time for a new prescription. #nursesonlinkedin #nurseleadership #paradigmshift #nursestaffing #localgovernment #empoweringpeople #solutionfocused American Nurses Association American Organization for Nursing Leadership ANA-OHIO National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Ohio Board of Nursing National League for Nursing American Academy of Nursing National Center for Assisted Living National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards

DEI = Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Of those three words, oddly, "Diversity" may be the least important of three important words. While Diversity is a reality to build, Equity is part of the hard work that makes it happen, and Inclusion is both a result and the maintenance of a diversified team. Belonging and Justice, two more initials you can find in association with DEI, stem from there. Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL) has released it's August DEI Committee Newsletter - check it out for a focus on the field of Community Health Nursing. #CommunityHealthNursing #NursingIsSTEM #NureLeaders
Welcome to The August Edition of the DEI Committee Newsletter This month, we focus on a vital and dynamic field within nursing: Community Health Nursing. As we navigate the complexities of healthcare, the role of community health nurses has never been more crucial. These dedicated professionals serve as the backbone of our healthcare system, working tirelessly to promote health, prevent disease, and improve the quality of life for individuals and communities alike. The recent CMS Staffing Mandate has highlighted a critical issue in our aging care sector: a severe workforce shortage. As LeadingAge Maryland points out, the state would need 206 additional full-time registered nurses, and more than 1,897 full-time nursing assistants to comply – professionals who simply aren't available in the current job market. While well-intentioned, top-down mandates can't solve a problem of this magnitude. We need creative, community-driven solutions to grow and sustain our direct care workforce. This shortage isn't unique to Maryland. It's a national crisis that demands innovative, multi-faceted solutions: ↳ Enhancing education and training programs to attract new talent ↳ Improving compensation and benefits to retain existing caregivers ↳ Leveraging technology to support and augment human care ↳ Creating clear career pathways to make caregiving a desirable long-term profession ↳ Addressing burnout and mental health concerns in the industry While we can't solve the pressing workforce issues in aging care alone, we're deeply inspired by the leaders paving the way, tackling our workforce challenges from multiple angles. Some are spearheading new and inventive training for caregivers, nurses, and medical students, while others are pioneering innovative ways to grow (and fairly compensate) our direct care workforce. These leaders are lighting the path toward a more sustainable future in aging care and we'd like to recognize them here: 📣 Amy Leigh Overton-Mccoy and her team at UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. 📣 Kelly Aldrich DNP, RN, NI-BC, FHIMSS, FAAN, Kanah Lewallen, Jennifer Kim and colleagues at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. 📣 Jaime Hannans and team at California State University Channel Islands. 📣 Sean Kelly, Kari Olson, and the Front Porch Communities & Services team. 📣 Marvell Adams Jr., Chance Browning, and Caregiver Action Network. 📣 Susan DeMarois and the California Department of Aging's #CalGROWS initiative. 📣 Plus our own Carrie Cusker MS, BSN, RN and Tonia Nguyen, OTD, OTR/L for their dedicated work alongside our mighty Embodied Labs® team. We call for the continued collaboration needed to build a robust, resilient, well-compensated workforce that can provide quality care for our aging population. Together, we can create a future of healthy aging for all.
LeadingAge Maryland has joined forces with 21 LeadingAge State Affiliates and 20 Attorneys General in a lawsuit seeking to overturn CMS' Staffing Mandate. We share CMS’ goal of ensuring older adults and others have access to high quality skilled nursing care. We have continued to advocate, along with LeadingAge National, that the staffing mandate as written is untenable, given the documented shortage of registered nurses and other nursing professionals in our state and across the country. Our membership includes some of the state's oldest, not-for-profit mission-driven nursing homes, many of whom have decades and even century long histories in their community. We are proud to take this opportunity to advocate on their behalf. We invite you to learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eM84g8X9

This is a very touching principle in EOL in Critical Care
Introducing the pause after the death of a patient in critical care Observing a collective moment of silence when a patient dies is valuable for both staff and the bereaved. This initiative won the Critical and Emergency Care Nursing category in the 2023 Nursing Times Awards. Authors: Melanie Pinnington is practice educator for Southport Critical Care Unit; Angela Westwood is matron for critical care, critical care outreach team, cardiac rehabilitation and pain teams; both at Southport Hospital, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. They are both Schwarz Rounds facilitators. #nurse #nurses #nursing #health #healthcare #criticalcare #ntawards #emergencycare #emergencydepartment #aande #hospital #innovation https://lnkd.in/eF_b5CBk

“The invisibility of nursing work, the inability to put a value on it ... is not in line with how any other kind of professional service would operate.” The lack of understanding of the nurse role continues to plague systems, especially in ambulatory areas. Outpatient acuity, prioritization, and triage do not translate well, and the first place organizations feel the fat should be trimmed is at the nursing level. Perception is rarely fact, and organizations are not as profitable because we are not pushing nursing as a billable service. Nurses are licensed care providers who provide their own independent care modalities, otherwise, why even require they have a license to practice in the first place. https://lnkd.in/e2W6kXUy
