Triage: at the helm Triage is typically the first point of contact with a healthcare professional when a person enters the Emergency Department. Triage nurses are trained to sort between the urgent, non-urgent, and life-threatening afflictions, and they simultaneously assess by using visual inspection, vital signs, and nursing judgment based on years of experience to determine how to score a patient on the triage severity scoring index. Many cases I review start with triage. Were the vital signs appreciated? Was the history sufficient? Balancing between expeditious and thorough, triage is an intricate emergency nursing skill that drives the patient's care throughout their stay in the Emergency Department. Want to learn more? #MakePositiveNoise honestly… this is a retention strategy that will work as long as you make is accessible to bedside staff. Grand rounds are usually hard to make, difficult to get people to come to and challenging to get staff to engage. Utilizing digital technology is an easy way to do this. Step 1: Have the speaker send a teaser video (I usually do a long form, captioned video of me walking the dog or doing something random, saying hi! I am Mel… I do this. And I’m looking forward to seeing y’all soon! ) then they email that to the staff prior to my arrival with a registration link. Step 2: the day of the grand rounds i am on tiktok. Twitter, insta. Engaging with folks. Then they film me. I let them! Why? Well I usually say something different each time, also, I love to have them send the recording out to staff who couldn’t make it. Step 3: follow up survey. That survey can include questions about what would make people more engaged and allow for feedback in a narrative. To learn how to use speakers to retain staff like this incredible organization is doing, send me a message. Happy to help you strategize! #positive #healthcare #innovation #newgradnurses #retention
