"Men, Special Forces is a mistress. Your wives will envy her because she will have your hearts. Your wives will be jealous of her because of the power to pull you away. This mistress will show you things never before seen, and experience things never before felt. She will love you, but only a little, seducing you to want more, give more, die for her. She will take you away from the ones you love, and you will hate her for it, but leave her you never will, but if you must, you will miss her, for she has a part of you that will never be returned intact. And in the end, she will leave you for a younger man." James R. Ward, Office of Strategic Services (OSS)

The narratives of Shamony Gibson and Amber Rose Isaac serve as profound and heartbreaking reminders of the urgent need to confront the deeply ingrained racial disparities within maternal healthcare in the United States. Their tragic stories not only illuminate the systemic failures that contributed to their untimely deaths but also underscore the pervasive impact of structural racism on healthcare outcomes. As we bear witness to these devastating narratives, it becomes painfully clear that the challenges faced by Black women in accessing quality maternal care are multifaceted and deeply entrenched. From disparities in access to prenatal care and postpartum support to biases and discrimination within healthcare systems, the barriers to equitable care are significant and pervasive. Directed by Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee, 'Aftershock' courageously dives into the complexities of these issues, exposing the structural inequalities and institutional biases that perpetuate harm within the maternal health system. Through their powerful storytelling, Eiselt and Lewis Lee provide a platform for the voices of those impacted by these injustices to be heard, amplifying the call for accountability and systemic change. The disparities in maternal mortality rates between Black and white women serve as a stark reminder of the profound inequities within our healthcare systems. Recent research has revealed that Black women are five times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts—a troubling statistic that highlights the urgent need for action. Moreover, emerging evidence suggests that state initiatives aimed at restricting abortion access could further exacerbate these disparities, particularly for Black women who already face disproportionate barriers to healthcare access and quality. This underscores the interconnected nature of reproductive health policies and maternal outcomes, emphasizing the importance of addressing systemic racism and advocating for comprehensive, equitable healthcare policies that prioritize the needs of marginalized communities. In light of these sobering realities, it is incumbent upon us to confront the structural injustices that perpetuate disparities in maternal healthcare and to work towards meaningful, systemic change. By centering the voices and experiences of those most impacted by these disparities, we can collectively strive towards a future where all individuals have access to safe, equitable, and dignified maternal care. #AftershockDocumentary #BEhealth
