On International Long COVID Awareness Day, I want to acknowledge the significant number of Australians affected by Long COVID. With an estimated 65 million people globally experiencing over 200 symptoms related to Long COVID, the condition continues to exert a profound impact on our communities. The effects are wide-ranging, impacting physical and mental health, as well as employment and financial stability. Moderna provided input into the Australian Parliament’s Inquiry into Long COVID, which put forth several key recommendations aimed at enhancing our understanding of the prevention and management of the condition. We welcome the Government’s response to this parliamentary inquiry including an additional $50 million for further research and initiatives that continue to communicate the importance of behaviors to help protect against COVID-19. Reducing the spread of COVID-19 has an important role to play in reducing Long COVID. It is a pertinent time to reflect on this, considering that it is estimated that between 2-20% of Australians report Long COVID symptoms extending beyond three months after infection. Today serves as a reminder of the importance of continuing to take precautions to help protect ourselves from COVID-19, especially for the elderly and those with underlying conditions who are at greater risk of severe illness. The need for ongoing research is undeniable, and I am heartened by the expanding scope of scientific studies being conducted in Australia and internationally to address Long COVID.

Whether their motivation is purely mercenary or in service of a more malignant agenda I cannot say, but I do not need to say.
