Document shredding events are a great idea.. Let's all remember to think about and adopt a meaningful document retention policy. In your document retention policy divide your documents to groups such as -- - "must always have", like formation documents, agreements. - "must have" due to external requirements, eg. tax laws. - "must have for a limited period" of time like credit card receipts (if you process customer payments). - "Want to have" for a while like customer records. - "Don't need" to hold on to, like drafts, notes, phone messages (recorded or on paper). It's a good idea to run this policy by your attorney just to be sure. FUN FACT: email and voice mail messages should also be covered in your document retention policy. Of course each business is different so owners will do well to consider their risks and needs specific to their business needs and requirements.
