"After just six months, Banner|Aetna members saw transformational health outcomes. In one year, those results are even more dramatic and demonstrate the long-lasting success of Virta’s program.
Sustained metabolic health improvements for Banner|Aetna members enrolled at one year include:
Prescription reduction: Members eliminated 66% of diabetes medications (excluding metformin), including an 83% reduction in insulin dosages. Of those on insulin, 58% eliminated it completely.
Blood sugar reduction: On average, members saw a 1.4% reduction in A1c blood sugar levels. Every one-point decrease in A1c reduces the risk of long-term diabetes complications by up to 40%.
Clinically significant weight loss: Members experienced 11% weight loss on average (5% is considered clinically significant).
Clinically significant weight loss can lead to better sleep, reduced inflammation, improved blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease and positive impacts on arthritis and fatty liver disease.
Banner|Aetna members nationwide receive care that fits their unique lifestyle, culture, dietary preferences, and budget thanks to Virta’s expert care and personalized approach to nutrition.
“Virta is flexible, and that’s why it works,” said Robert Groves, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer at Banner|Aetna. “With one-on-one support and individualized nutrition plans, our members are achieving life-changing outcomes that last, without the need for expensive medications like GLP1s.”

There’s been a lot of focus on the out-of-pocket cost of insulin, but what about other diabetes medications? Our #healthcare experts take a deep dive in this Letter to the Editor for the AJMC. https://ow.ly/1aAO50QLBuS
From Kris, FNP-BC:
Ozempic is a medication primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes by helping control blood sugar levels. Recently, it has gained popularity because it can also lead to weight loss as a secondary benefit. However, it’s important to clarify that Ozempic is not FDA-approved for weight loss.
Current FDA-Approved Weight Loss Medications: The only medications currently approved for weight loss therapy are Wegovy and Zepound.
Why the Confusion? Occasionally, insurance companies may allow Ozempic or Mounjaro as alternative therapies if they are listed on their formulary as acceptable alternatives. Additionally, some people might be able to get this medication because they are willing to pay the out-of-pocket cost, which can range from $800-$1200 per month on average. This is why you might see some people prescribed these medications for weight loss.
My Perspective on GLP-1 Medications: I personally believe that GLP-1 medications, like Ozempic, are revolutionary for weight loss therapy. There hasn’t been anything like them on the market for weight management before, which is why they are so popularly prescribed by providers.
The Need for Proactive Management: Obesity is a disease that requires proactive management to prevent cardiovascular, metabolic, and endocrine diseases or, in many cases, manage these diseases more effectively. I hope the industry catches up to meet the demand for effective obesity treatments.
