Creating a diagram and building a physical model are often seen as distinct processes in architecture, each with its unique approach and purpose. In the case of White Plains Hospital, the design team sought to make a unique tool for understanding the application of interior building materials. This model blurs the boundary between diagram and model, creating an “x-ray skeleton” of the building to explore the relationships of spaces and their material palettes. The model can be stacked and unstacked, allowing one to hold each plate and get up close for better viewing from different angles, furthering understanding of relationships between key elements of design in three dimensions. #artofmaking #designalways #models #fabrication
