Two days ago, I presented a case study about abdominal pain and asked about possible diagnoses. My post included that physicians are taught in med school to think of horses not zebras. Here are some zebras that could be the right diagnosis for the case: Mesenteric ischemia Boerhaave syndrome Sigmoid volvulus Rectus sheath hematoma Psuedomembranous colitis Colovesicular fistula Small bowel obstruction All told, my research identified nearly 200 possible diagnoses for the case study. The point should be clear. A human brain will never consider so many diagnoses and will most likely miss most of the zebras and some of the horses.
