Further to our post earlier this week about questions within the French National Assembly regarding plans for replacement of the Patrouille de France's fleet of AlphaJets and the response mentioning interest in a modular solution, it was interesting to see a related question being raised in the UK Parliament. It is good to see the conversation evolving around the wide ranging benefits of a modular solution for air forces, including of course, the Royal Air Force. #Modular #AERALIS #Airforce

Two fighter jets clipped wings during a performance at the Fort Lauderdale Air Show over the weekend, causing a moment of panic among spectators. Video footage captured the incident as the Polaris Ghost Squadron attempted to get into formation. Fortunately, both pilots were unharmed and were able to regain control of their aircraft. The air show declared an emergency as a precaution, but both jets landed safely. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce #usa #florida #airshow #accident #safety

Technically, "Air Force One" isn't one specific aircraft but the call sign assigned to any U.S. Air Force plane carrying the President. The current fleet consists of two heavily modified Boeing 747-200B models. Flying White House: These planes are essentially flying White Houses, equipped with offices, sleeping quarters, a medical suite, and secure communications systems. Origin story: The "Air Force One" call sign originated in 1953 when an Eastern Airlines flight nearly collided with a presidential plane using the call sign "Air Force 8610." To avoid confusion, "Air Force One" was established for the President's aircraft. Applies to other presidents: The call sign applies not just to the sitting president but also to former presidents traveling under government auspices. Not just the U.S.: Other countries have similar call signs for their presidential aircraft, like "Air Force Two" for the U.S. Vice President and "Canadian One" for the Canadian Prime Minister.
#PresidentsDay facts about “Air Force One”: 1. Any aircraft carrying the president = “Air Force One” 2. Conceptualized in 1962 3. Available for the president at a moment’s notice 4. Office in the air with refueling capabilities

Giant on the city: C-17 Globemaster III The C-17 Globemaster III is the most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations. The inherent flexibility and performance of the C-17 force improve the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States.

The United States Air Force Aircraft Accident Investigation Board have released their report (https://lnkd.in/gdDGPaf5) into a B-1B accident that occurred in January 2024 which destroyed the aircraft and saw the crew safely eject. The primary cause of the accident was "the lack of an effective composite crosscheck by the crew," resulting in inadequate flightpath monitoring. Historically, that might be called 'human error,' but labelling it as such does nothing to teach the broader aviation and safety communities what can be gleaned from this accident in terms of improvement. As such, the USAF AAIB report is comprehensive, honest, and illustrates how quickly events can deteriorate in safety-critical aviation operations. Importantly, the report details contributing factors including crew resource management, human factors, leadership, and the importance of a positive & assertive safety culture. Thanks to MS&T Magazine for raising awareness of the report's publication. #aviationsafety #aviation #pilottraining #aerospace

A Lesson in History from our Esteemed Defence Secretary I don’t want to pick on Grant Shapps, because he just never learns and continues to quote the most ludicrous facts in his puerile, ill-informed posts. I detest bullies, but I just won’t let our Defence Secretary release such useless, meaningless garbage to the public, in a blatant attempt to mislead the electorate. To be fair to the two fabulous aircraft that he chooses to compare and to demonstrate the weakness in the rather infantile graphic in his post, I need to make some simple observations. The C-47 (RAF designation - Dakota) he quotes below is in excess of 80 years old. To provide some context, aviation is accepted as having started in 1903, so when the RAF received 1,900 x C-47 Dakota’s in 1944, on a lease/buy deal from the Americans, mankind had been enjoying powered flight for 41 years! Grant Shapps wants to boast that 80 years later, we have increased our lift capacity! He is probably stifling a laugh as he thinks of the public reaction to this amazing increase to our military capability. Unfortunately for him, we are not the simpletons he perceives us to be. He also has no idea how ridiculous his comparitor is, and given his intended decption through the use of a totally misleading graphic, he will likely think he will not be rumbled, sorry to disappoint you Grant. Let’s look more closely at the figures: Total number of RAF C-47 Dakotas in 1944 - c2,000 (two thousand). Total number of RAF C-17 Globemasters in 2024 - 6 (six). Currently in-service with 99 Sqn, RAF Brize Norton. Load capacity in 1944 using all C-47 Dakota aircraft - 12,000,000 lb or 56,000 troops. Load capacity in 2024 using all C-17 Globemaster aircraft - 1,033,200 lb or 612 troops. C-47 Dakota - General characteristics Crew: 4 (pilot, co-pilot, navigator, radio operator) Capacity: 28 troops or 6,000 lb (2.72 t) of cargo Length: 63 ft 9 in (19.43 m) Wingspan: 95 ft 6 in (29.11 m) Height: 17 ft 0 in (5.18 m) C-17 GLOBEMASTER Specifications Crew: 2 pilots and 1 loadmaster Capacity: Maximum of 154 troops Normal load of: 102 fully-equipped troops, up to 172,200lb (78,108kg) on up to 18 standard freight pallets or 48 litters in the medevac role Length Overall: 53.04m Height Overall: 16.8m Wingspan: 50.29m Interesting Note: More than 50,000 paratroops were dropped by C-47s during the first few days of the D-Day campaign. It would take the six C-17s, c490 flights to achieve the same and on a more light hearted point, 1 loss and 1 breakdown would deplete our capacity by 30% (+). The point to be made is that digging out silly facts is unhelpful in what is a deadly serious business. The public need to hear the truth above all else. His carefully chosen words show a lift increase since WWII, but where is the relevance! So once again, I am driven to point out Mr Shapps’ lack of knowledge, experience, service, or clue. #LiCwaffle #cleanuppolitics #nomorelies #tellthetruth #respectthepublic

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has greater lift capacity today than at any point since WW2. In fact our C17s can today take the payload of around 28 of the famed C47 Dakota’s that made such an impact on D-Day.

Imagine if three aircraft could be flown by one crew. Now they can. GA-ASI and Air Force Special Operations Command have proved it, as well as MQ-9A's ability to launch the Altius 600 ALE. Learn how we’re bringing AFSOC's Adaptive Airborne Enterprise to reality: https://ow.ly/WTqs50Qy0aU

This could be great for minimizing the amount of aircrew and equipment needed to control these Remotely Piloted Aircraft. Combining this with some of the advances and successes of Ferry Flights, the future looks interesting for this airframe and system.
