The Constraining Choice article reminds us that constraint is the Challenger’s ultimate fuel. Where the natural first response to a lack of resource, experience or interest, is to lower the ambition. Challengers work hard to find the opportunity within the constraint, disrupting the status quo to find a more creative solution. Africa is no stranger to constraint. There is a significant need for entrepreneurship on the continent, which often requires 'anti-system' thinking: thinking like an entrepreneur, creating a supportive ecosystem, and overcoming the existing constraints. Yoco is a fantastic local example of doing precisely that. They set out to break free from the constraints imposed by the broader payment systems industry, serving a market of creators that was previously underserved by providing solutions that integrated them into mainstream commerce. You may have noticed that I love talking about the importance of purpose! 😉 Step forward Coffee & TV; a visual arts studio who, as a founding principle, noticed that every step they take to be a BETTER company makes THEM better at their work. A focus on their team and artist-led culture is at the centre of everything they do. This outlook, in an industry where artists are not looked after, is unique. The words ‘care’ and ‘consideration’ feature on their LinkedIn bio and they shout loud and proud that they are on a mission to create harmonious workplaces where people are nurtured and empowered to grow and deliver their best work. This nurturing purpose has attracted both a global client roster and outstanding industry talent whilst maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental performance. They’ve been named Winner of the ‘Best Place to Work in TV’ Award for the last two years. They’ve also achieved the status of the UK’s first B Corp certified creative studio, maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental performance. But don’t think this people and planet focus has somehow affected their performance. Earlier this year, Omnicom purchased the studio in a move that will fuel their international expansion whilst protecting their individuality and independence. Daring to do things driven by their purpose of pairing world class visual arts with a people-first culture, created this amazing growth opportunity. This narrative unfolds through the lens of Guan Hin Tay, the Creative Chairman at BBDO Worldwide Singapore, and his brilliant concept of "Collide." And I’m very greatful for the opportunity to learn from him during our #MC6348 #IssuesInInterActiveadvertising course, led by Pei Wen Wong. 🧐 Guan's philosophy, as shared in various interactions and his publication, emphasises the fusion of disparate elements to unlock new realms of creativity and innovation. His method is not just about breaking norms but about creating a synergy between contrasting ideas to produce something unprecedented and engaging. 💬 Here are the three key points: 1. Colliding familiar things to make something unfamiliar. 2. Head on collision to break convention. 3. Collision is the catalyst to spark bold changes. For instance, the concept of "Collide", highlighted through the campaign "Perfume Portrait" by Lux, showcases how sensory experiences can be reimagined through visual narratives, crafting the unfamiliar from the familiar. In this case, the “real beauty” of their product’s smell was captured through the lens of a blind photographer 📸 . Another inspiring story from Mr. Guan's experience involves the disruptive creativity of the word "clean". When we think of "cleanliness", we often associate it with concrete objects such as soap, white, and brooms. However, what if we approach it from a different perspective and consider "dirtiness"? It turns out that the winner was the unexpected entry tearing up a "dirty" adult magazine. This initiative resulted in an accessible hub of creativity within the studio. ✨ Devin Fisher From Chaos to Creativity: Mastering Studio Culture and Technology Devin’s post lunch, lead sponsor session was filled with great industry stories, laughter, and the importance of supportive culture through ambassadorships. ✨ Karen Williams, Bimi Ibok, Kelly Elaine Garthwaite, Rachel Miller Ensuring Authenticity in Creative Outputs In a panel moderated by Karen Williams, the discussion focused on the importance of diversity in the creative process and business. Diversity was defined broadly, encompassing ideas, perspectives, and solutions, as well as race, gender, physical ability, and socioeconomic background. The panel emphasized removing barriers and avoiding assumptions to allow for new perspectives that foster growth. Through mentorship and partnerships, both internal and external, organizations can expand ideas, create supportive environments, and amplify the voices of undervalued team members. ✨ Daniel Jester, Erin Corbett, Kat Hennessey, Grace Brumley Future Proofing Your Studio Operations in a Changing World In a panel moderated by Daniel Jester, the discussion centered on adapting to new technology without chasing trends. The panelists highlighted how language can gatekeep information, stressing the need to communicate effectively with your audience. When investing in technology, they recommended identifying at least five use cases before committing, especially with costly items. They also emphasized the importance of consistency in tools and avoiding single points of failure.
