Dieter Rams, the legendary industrial designer, established 10 design principles that encapsulate “good” design: 01. Good design is innovative. 02. Good design makes a product useful. 03. Good design is aesthetic. 04. Good design makes a product understandable. 05. Good design is unobtrusive. 06. Good design is honest. 07. Good design is long-lasting. 08. Good design is thorough down to the last detail. 09. Good design is environmentally friendly. 10. Good design is as little design as possible. These principles provide a high-level understanding and are particularly effective in an industrial design context. However, 'good design' can be defined differently depending on the medium and is inherently subjective. Below are 10 design principles I use to evaluate good design: 01. Clarity: Good design is clear and avoids needless distractions. 02. Symmetry: It is symmetrical, balancing elements to create harmony. 03. Balance: It is balanced, evenly distributing visual weight. 04. Contrast: It uses contrast to add emphasis and interest. 05. Hierarchy: It has a hierarchy to guide the viewer's attention. 06. Cultural Sensitivity: It is culturally sensitive, being suitable for its target audience. 07. Accessibility: It is accessible, ensuring usability. 08. Space Utilization: It uses space appropriately, considering both added elements and empty space. 09. Movement: It creates movement, leading the viewer toward an intended action. 10. Design Design can range from beautiful and interesting objects to practical and functional solutions. Both approaches have value and can often be combined. The diversity in design allows for solving various problems and meeting different needs. Balancing beauty, interest, and practicality is key to creating designs that are both aesthetically enjoyable and functional. Types of design 1. Aesthetic design: focuses on visual attractiveness and emotional impact through unique forms, colors, and textures. 2. Innovative design: seeks new and unique solutions that surprise and inspire. 3. Functional design: prioritizes usability and practicality, meeting specific needs and being user-friendly. 4. Sustainable design: emphasizes longevity and sustainability with eco-friendly materials and solutions. The role of a designer is dynamic and requires a deep understanding of various elements to innovate, improve usability, and meet both user and business goals. Effective communication with clients throughout the project ensures compliance with their expectations and needs. What makes a good design? It certainly isn't the CyberTruck. The CyberTruck is pretty cool, it looks wild. It also has some of the worse design features I've seen. I'm not an expert in design but I'll share why it sucks. Let's focus entirely on just one thing: The Door button Not only is this the worse designed door handle I've seen It's also counter intuitive to the function of the door. It does the opposite of what you would think it does. The Norman Door principle says an object should communicate its function. If you need to put a sign up to tell people how to use it, it's poor design. You don't need a sign for a toaster, a microwave, a kettle or a pot. Obviously designed to communicate the use and function. Door fail this principle all the time, to the anger of everyone! How many times have you pushed a pull door? I bet if you look, the door has a bar that looks like it should be pushed. Only to have an awful corroded sticker saying "PULL". Here's a hint: look for the hinges. if they're on your side you pull. So what does this have to do with the CyberTruck? Well for starters the button doesn't communicate its function. Its just a button next to the door, you need to be educated on its use. This is the least of the crimes of this door. A door handle is more than just an unlatching device. It also acts as an indicator on where to place your hand. A lever to assist opening the door. It also tells you which side the door opens on. A door handle is anything but a handle. When we look at the CyberTruck you have the following. A button that would make you assume the door auto opens. You have to grab the window to open the door. The button is at least on the right side of the door opening. You get fingerprints all over the window and panels. All of this on top of the added friction to the opening process. When push button starts were introduced to cars. You reduced the start process from a 2-step process (Insert, turn) Down to a 1-step process. ([push button) This reduced the friction of the starting process. Adding a button to the door opening added friction. It went from a 1-step process (pull handle) To a 2-step process (press button, pull window) This did not make the door design better. Novelty is not a good design choice. I know I'm very passionate about door buttons. Novelty is a design choice you can make You just shouldn't sacrifice user experience for it.
