Digital health is revolutionizing healthcare, but are we leaving some behind? The digital divide threatens to widen health inequalities, potentially excluding millions from life-saving innovations. Here's why this matters: In Europe alone, 44% of people lack basic digital skills, while globally, 3,7 billion remain offline. This digital gap could exacerbate existing health disparities, affecting vulnerable populations the most. So, instead of rushing headlong into digital health without consideration, we must ensure equitable access and adoption for all. Here are five steps towards health equity. What do you think about balancing innovation with inclusivity in healthcare?

Health care Strategy, Economics and Policy Scientist | Scientific Consultant, Writer, Speaker and Professor.
During the #sxsw2024 there are a few forums focusing on #healthcare #value, #strategy and #policy. In the section “Role in Equity and Value-Based Care,” the power of technology advances to manage the healthcare burden and challenges was used to explain how value-based healthcare requires technology to be achieved. Here I consolidate a few impactful thoughts shared by the panelists: First, the point is that using technology to increase value is not about the technology we already have available but what we, as humans, can do with the technology. It needs to be used to increase equity and: “Health equity is health = we can not activate true health unless we are promoting the disparities we have. Or, in another angle, health equity is providing people what they need in the amount they need. And each people can need a different amount.” Making it happen requires reducing disparities, and for this, technological advances can be key. The evidence from real-world data has shown how the SDOH can explain several clinical conditions, and are caused by where people live, what people eat, their genetics, education level, etc. By improving the SDOH conditions, it is possible to avoid disease advances anywhere, and technology can be used to better measure and follow SDOH anywhere. By focusing most of the healthcare expenses on advanced therapies and hospital structures, the starting point is already bad. It is necessary to focus technology on improving people's life conditions, education, behavior, and habits and use it to build more effective, intelligent health services and to reduce the healthcare burden. For this and other challenges that can exemplify the impact of technology, it is necessary to see technology as a tool, but it only becomes powerful when effective used in with collaboration and partnerships driven to deliver better health to patients. It is necessary to use the powerful tools available with care integration, which involves industry, policymakers, patients, and providers working in a win-win partnership to solve healthcare problems and result in better outcomes. Finally, to accelerate the power of technology to increase value in health, it is necessary to increase #Trust. By establishing trusty partnerships, the focus is on doing the right thing and on improving continually. Everybody works for the best and waits for the best; as a consequence, the outcomes will be the best possible for each patient. Thank you all the panelists!

I recently had the privilege of attending a business roundtable organized by the Economist Intelligence: EIU, featuring insights from healthcare experts, including my colleague Yoong Kang Zee. The discussion centered on the theme “Living to 120,” focusing on the shift in healthcare management from merely extending lifespan to enhancing health-span. As we delve into this new era, it's clear that a multifaceted approach is necessary—integrating physical, commercial, and social interventions within our communities. At NCS Group our role in this transition is significant. We develop and support digital health infrastructures that not only make healthcare more accessible and equitable but also play a crucial role in bridging the gap between health-span and lifespan. These initiatives (some of them shown at https://lnkd.in/dBcrdzkg) demonstrate our commitment to advance communities by partnering government and enterprises to harness technology. #ncslife #healthcare
