Vishnu Amble’s Post

One of our initiatives for societal impact is the promotion of cleaner air for pedestrians and families to be able to walk outside without discomfort and health risks. This is particularly (and increasingly so) an issue in developing markets and can always be improved in developed countries. The opportunity and impact of electric bulk commercial and passenger transportation such as #buses and #trucks is tremendous. This is one of the reasons we had invested and supported Proterra Inc over the years. Recent challenges in capital markets certainly did not help the company or sector, nor did the challenges associated with companies that try to be profitable and generate cash flows through sales to cities, and specifically transit agencies. Yes, Proterra Inc chose to access capital markets via the now much-maligned (and deservedly so) SPAC route, but As of the August 2023 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, the company had delivered more than 1,000 electric transit buses, including 199 new transit buses and 14 pre-owned buses in 2022, so there was some real progress evidence - although it was 18 years since founding - high impact can take a lenghty amount of time and the disruptive impact of the electrification of bulk transportation is significant. So what are the lessons learned and how and when do we see the market-based scaling of electrification of bulk transportation? There is no doubt capital in private market funds to support various next generation companies, but will they learn from prior lessons and market cycles? We will see. #electricvehicles #transportation #trucks #buses #electrification #cleanair #ecosystem #harmony #capitalmarkets https://lnkd.in/gftT_pTn

Not sure why it is not obvious to entrepreneurs and investors in the electric commercial mobility sector that unless the company has a robust supply chain (read economically viable plus domestic plus a strong balance sheet of the suppliers) it’s doomed to fail when the time comes to scale up. 1000 buses are fine but at scale the lack of a reliable and economically sustainable supply of batteries caved Proterra. We have seen this movie too many times since the days of Coda Automotive and nameless other tombstones populating the graveyard in this space since 2014/15. Just thinking that we can bring cells or packs from Asia is a strategy fraught with challenges. A strategy around domestic and strong supply chain is eluding the management teams of these companies leading to a demise as scale begins to happen.

Vishnu Amble, What strategies do you think can ensure long-term success in this endeavor?
