Recently we teamed up with GHD to conduct a detailed contour survey for designing the access road for the new Greenvale BoM weather radar site. After further consultation, Vision proposed integrating LiDAR with traditional survey methods. This approach ensured we captured precise topographic data across a much broader area of the site to better understand overland drainage flows, essential for designing the stormwater management, and access road itself economically and effectively. Vision also developed preliminary access road designs, considering the logistics of transporting and assembling the prefabricated tower and radar dome at the site’s summit. So pleased to support this important work by Chris Hopkinson at The University of Lethbridge in Alberta. “The data is confirming that the snowpack in the mountains is not very abundant,” says Hopkinson. “But it’s important to bear in mind that we don’t really have anything to compare it to because we’ve never done this before. All we can do is take our estimates of snowpack water equivalents in the mountains and relate it to similar data structures such as precipitation gauges, snow pillows, field data or runoff records.” While the LiDAR results are comparable to traditional measurements, LiDAR can provide more spatially precise. #environment #lidar data.https://https://lnkd.in/gCBKgbBh

High quality #3D models of #river morphology are vital to support our understanding of #flood hazards and fluvial processes. While conventional #lidar has provided revolutionary perspectives on floodplain form and structure, insights into what's happening below the water surface have been far harder to gleam. A new generation of small-footprint, high frequency green lidar systems now offers real promise to rebalance this information deficit. We've been working across Aotearoa | #New Zealand to test and optimize airborne bathymetric survey workflows with the new #Riegl VQ-840-G #topobathy lidar. This new model of the Wairau River in the top of the South Island is hot of the press: a 25 km seamless topobathy model of this complex braided river. The model comprises over 10 points/m2 under water and over 60 points/m2 in the exposed river corridor. Validation against sonar observations collected from a remote control jet boat suggest a RMSE of less than 4 cm. These data will play an important role in supporting the Marlborough District Council advance their strategies to enhance flood risk management in this challenging environment.
