As someone with a grad degree in info security, a Security+ certification, and about 1.5 years experience in Level 2 software support, I’m trying to figure out how best to present my skills to break into a higher-paying IT position. After being laid off about 4 months ago, I feel pretty determined to build up an impressive portfolio. Right now, I've got four write-ups focused on CTFs and investigations using Splunk. However, I want to step it up and include: 10-15 write-ups on Python for system administration More CTFs SQL scripting for troubleshooting Scripting on Linux But I can’t help but wonder if I’m just spinning my wheels—all this effort with potential gatekeeping in the job market. 😓 I know I need to be better at Python and SQL, but I’m concerned that my year and a half of not-so-formal IT experience might limit me to those 40-50k help desk positions (if I'm lucky).
