Eye Diseases Series: Glaucoma ⛏ 👀
Yesterday while speaking with a business expert, she was talking about a miscellaneous eye disease and called it Glaucoma. It was as far from the truth as me referring to a computer as a business liability.
These series intend to provide quick snippets of eye care and vision facts.
The first week was headaches, next dry eyes, and concluding this week of eye diseases is Glaucoma.

Now for Glaucoma, PERIPHERAL VISION LOSS called TUNNEL VISION.
🗝Glaucoma is a complex eye condition that requires understanding of several key elements for effective management and treatment:
👁 Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, causing tunnel vision. The damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye.
🗝The two main types are open-angle glaucoma, which is slow and progressive, and angle-closure glaucoma, which can present suddenly and is a medical emergency.
🗝 Key risk factors for glaucoma include older age, genetics, certain medical conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, severe eye injuries, and the use of corticosteroid medications, especially for prolonged periods.
🚥 Open-angle glaucoma, OAG, often presents no symptoms until it's advanced. Acute angle-closure glaucoma, ACG, includes symptoms like severe eye pain, nausea, redness in the eye, blurred vision, and seeing halos around lights.
🕕 Early detection through regular eye exams is crucial, as people with early-stage glaucoma may not notice any symptoms. Comprehensive eye exams include measuring intraocular pressure, testing for optic nerve damage, visual field testing, and imaging tests.
🕚 Glaucoma damage is irreversible. Treatment can slow or prevent further vision loss. Treatment options include prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser treatment, and various surgical procedures to lower eye pressure.
