Ensuring safety on our roads is paramount, and Transport for London (TfL) has introduced crucial regulations you need to know about. 📋 The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) and safety permit scheme for HGVs require operators of lorries over 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight to obtain a safety permit before entering and operating in most of Greater London. Failure to do so could result in a penalty charge. The DVS measures how much an HGV driver can directly see through their cab windows. This directly impacts the safety of vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists near the vehicle. Starting from 28 October 2024, heavy goods vehicles over 12 tonnes must have a three-star rating or fit a Progressive Safe System to operate in Greater London. 🚛✨ Upgrade Your HGV Fleet with The Progressive Safe System! ✨🚛 From 28 October 2024, all HGVs rated below three stars will need to install the Progressive Safe System (PSS). Here's a quick summary of the seven key requirements: 1️⃣ Camera Monitoring System (CMS): Must be fitted to the nearside to eliminate blind spots. Can replace Class V and VI mirrors if it meets UNECE standards. 2️⃣ Class V and VI Mirrors or CMS: Must be fitted to the front and nearside of the vehicle. 3️⃣ Blind Spot Information System: Ensures full coverage down the nearside to detect vulnerable road users, avoiding activation by stationary objects. 4️⃣ Moving Off Information System (MOIS): Warns drivers of vulnerable road users in the front blind spot when moving off from rest. 5️⃣ Side Under-Run Protection: Must be fitted to both sides of the vehicle where practical. 6️⃣ Audible Warnings: Provide alerts to vulnerable road users when the vehicle is turning. 7️⃣ External Warning Signage: Clearly visible signs indicating hazards around the vehicle, preferably in A3 size where possible. 🚨 Enforcement: Driving an HGV in most of Greater London without a valid permit could result in a penalty charge of up to £550 (reduced to £275 if paid within 14 days). Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom is consulting our industry on amendments to driver licensing restrictions in England. We will be engaging closely with our members and DfT over the coming weeks to inform our response to the consultation. These are for coaches, HGVs and buses – and part of their work to reduce the respective driver shortages. The main asks are: ◾Remove the 50km restriction if bus and coach drivers aged 18 to 20 are driving a regular service. ◾ Allow a person to undertake the theory and off-road manoeuvres tests required to gain their driver certificate of professional competence (DCPC) before being granted a provisional bus, coach or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver entitlement. The DfT says they acknowledge training and licensing differences between passenger and HGV sectors – but that the second proposal could be applied to people doing tests for either type of driving.
