The dog turned one year old today, marking her sixth month with us. Her name is Cody; she’s had a few trips in a car but never on a bus. Occasionally, she gets eggs, yogurt, and honey—snacks on crunchy white fish skin, but her main meals are beef and chicken, while the evening fare is BARF. She loves to chew, from stolen pencils to paper—getting them back is forever tough. Cody is a Corgi, but she doesn’t look like one. Slim like a hotdog, she wears a funny face and hangs a tail on her bum. Oh, her tail—she chases it around as if it’s so much fun. And her ears—they swivel and fold like origami, transforming from stealth to full alert on demand. She eats twice a day and gets her daily walks after that. If there’s no rain or drizzle, she walks, runs, jumps, and pulls; otherwise, she’ll become dull and fat. When she rests, she lies down flat like a carpet on the ground. Sometimes she pants and catches her breath if she’s just finished running around the house like a little brat or after we get the pencil back. There’s no need to say “Happy Birthday” to Cody. Firstly, she won’t know. Secondly, she doesn’t care. Thirdly, it doesn’t matter if you don’t. Fourthly, even if you do, it’s just another day for her. Fifthly, if you only do special things on special days, something is seriously off-balance. Sixthly, every moment is special for Cody. Seventhly, she doesn’t belong to us; she is part of us, so she lives not a human life, but one that is her own, provided she doesn’t steal another pencil. The accepted wisdom is that when faced with a dauntingly stubborn blank page and you’re struggling with what to write, just write. Write anything. Get the juices flowing and follow where they go, they could lead to a golden epiphany….which I hope isn’t some sort of fetish I’m ignorant of. And this is what I have done, taken the wisdom at its word and puked up these words… I was doing something modern-manly, washing dishes or hanging laundry, when the radio programme playing in the background half broke into my attention zone. I say half because what I am going to share is a speedily snatched smattering of what was probably a half-hour broadcast. Apparently bees have dialects that are specific to their location. London bees, when communicating with fellow cockney beezers, sound different to Birmingham bees when they are chatting with fellow brummy buzzers. First off I was quite surprised that bees ‘talk’ to each other at all. I had assumed all that angry buzzing was a constant yell of ‘Sod Off!’ to stuff in their way as they flew about their honey making business, in a busy fashion, obviously. The questions that information raises is fascinating stuff, I thought. Fascinating enough to break the block and get me typing these words to vandalise the sparse white expanse which looked like it was going to kick my ass.
