Today (Sunday), I stumbled upon the 1859 Carrington Event – an event I hadn't heard of before. With solar flares making headlines recently, it got me thinking about how recent it actually was and how cognitive bias might underestimate the threat. Either way, it makes for a good, quick story. In 1859, the Carrington Event – the most powerful geomagnetic storm on record – wreaked havoc on telegraph systems across the globe. Telegraph operators at the time witnessed firsthand the destructive power of geomagnetic storms as their equipment sparked and caught fire, and communication networks were brought to a standstill. If a similar event were to occur today, the consequences would be catastrophic, given our dependence on technology and digital infrastructure. This would not be that dissimilar from the detonation of an EMP. Which led me to think, its likely human nature to underestimate this risk due to recency bias, a cognitive error where we place greater importance on recent experiences over statistical chance of historical events. Just because we haven't experienced a geomagnetic storm of Carrington's magnitude in our lifetimes doesn't mean the threat has diminished. In fact, our increasing reliance on satellites, GPS, power grids, and digital communication makes us more vulnerable than ever. A modern Carrington Event could cripple our power grids, disrupt communication networks, and cause massive economic losses. Imagine the chaos if satellites were knocked out, affecting everything from weather forecasting to financial transactions. In a world where geopolitical tensions are ever-present, such a vulnerability could be exploited by hostile actors. Geopolitical leaders may seize the opportunity to launch cyberattacks or other forms of aggression when nations are at their weakest, exacerbating the chaos and further destabilizing global security. Here is the link I watched for those interested, got to love his bowtie! https://lnkd.in/gC3Yx89f #Technology #RiskManagement #SpaceWeather #CarringtonEvent #RecencyBias #Infrastructure #Preparedness #TelegraphHistory #Geopolitics #Cybersecurity

New Orleans is a city where culture runs deep and the energy of the crowd is as vibrant as its rich history. 🎺✨ Our own Rich Vallaster III, CEM, DES brought back not just beignets and blues but invaluable insights from the @NSBA Conference for Public Education Leaders. Here are three takeaways for event professionals looking to make the most out of their host cities: 1️⃣ Destination Matters: Choose a city that beckons not just you, but also your attendees AND their families. A destination worth the travel. 2️⃣ Merge Event with Experience: Blur the lines between event spaces and city streets. Plan activities that splash the local colors into your event palette. 3️⃣ Leave a Positive Footprint: Whether through service or advocacy, ensure your event leaves a lasting positive legacy in the city. Want to catch these tips in action? 🎥 Watch Rich’s latest video for on-the-ground insights and strategies to elevate your next event! #EventProfs #IndustryInsights #EventPlanning

Remember to register for the final town hall event in Adelaide at 6:30pm Wednesday 12th June. It could not be explained any better than how Vanessa Cheng has outlined in this short video. Parents and students of faith aligned schools seek a positive right of choice for education to be aligned to their beliefs, with clear protections for schools to employ and educate in line with religious and moral values. What is required? Legislative clarity is required to allow for faith institutions (be it schools or places of worship) the protection to teach and practice their religious and moral beliefs. To remove any doubt, its parents and students that make the choice of faith aligned schooling, and the choice is to be taught by a system that supports and is consistent with their faith and choice in morals and religious practice. Be it belief about spiritual matters or beliefs around identity. I sincerely pray that the existing government and future governments uphold existing religious freedom and expression. Unfortunately proposed changes will erode this religious freedom and diversity of choice for Parents and Students. A positive event to attend and support. https://lnkd.in/gJ6y3ZwP
