Title: Enhancing End-of-Life Care: The Role of Death Doulas in Hospitals As the landscape of healthcare continues to evolve, so too does our understanding of the importance of holistic end-of-life care. Today, I'm thrilled to share insights on an emerging trend in hospitals: the integration of death doulas into patient care teams. Death doulas, also known as end-of-life doulas or death midwives, provide non-medical support and companionship to individuals and their families during the dying process. Their presence offers invaluable emotional, spiritual, and practical assistance, ensuring that patients experience dignity and comfort in their final moments. The inclusion of death doulas in hospital settings represents a paradigm shift towards a more compassionate and personalized approach to end-of-life care. By addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones, hospitals can create a more supportive environment for those facing life-limiting illnesses. Furthermore, research has shown that patients who receive holistic end-of-life care, including the support of death doulas, often report higher levels of satisfaction with their end-of-life experience. This underscores the significance of incorporating such services into standard healthcare practices. As hospitals begin to recognize the profound impact that death doulas can have on the quality of end-of-life care. By embracing this innovative model, they aim to enhance the overall well-being of their patients and uphold their dignity and autonomy until the very end. I invite fellow healthcare professionals and organizations to join in embracing this important aspect of patient-centered care. Together, let's ensure that every individual receives compassionate support and comfort during life's most sacred transition. #EndOfLifeCare #DeathDoulas #PatientCenteredCare #SeniorWise

So if you translate the advice about what to bring when you come to the ED, it basically boils down to a survival kit and someone to take care of you, because the hospital can’t do it. One night of boarding in the ED once the decision to admit has been made increases mortality. Let me translate that into plain English: boarding patients in the ED kills people. Is that clear enough? Smdh this is sickening and so, so frustrating, because we’ve been warning about it for years. One more time for clarity and emphasis: BOARDING ADMITTED PATIENTS IN THE ED KILLS PEOPLE.

We must consider the potential drawbacks of intensive care units (ICUs) in our healthcare systems. The unfamiliar environment, constant monitoring, enforced immobilization, and powerful medications can have adverse effects on patients, leading to cognitive and physical deterioration. In a personal experience, my mother's health declined in the ICU due to forced immobility and lack of mobilization. Fortunately, a supportive environment at home, with the help of a home nurse and family, led to her significant recovery without the need for intensive rehabilitation. It's encouraging to see a growing awareness of these issues, reflected in updated ICU designs and enhanced staff training protocols. ER Boarding Crisis Worsens for Older Adults, Posing Severe Risks to Health Emergency room physicians are sounding the alarm over the escalating problem of ER boarding, which has reached unprecedented levels, surpassing even the challenges faced during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Among those most vulnerable to the detrimental effects of prolonged ER waits are older adults, who make up a significant portion of ER visits. With staff shortages, bed availability issues, and high demand for hospital services exacerbating the crisis, seniors face serious risks to their health while waiting for care. The situation has been described as a public health crisis, demanding urgent attention and intervention. #ERBoarding #HealthCrisis #AgingPopulation #EmergencyMedicine #HealthcareSystem

When a loved one returns home from the hospital, they often face a complex recovery process. After discharge, patients are expected to manage medications, wound care, and follow-up on their own. This can be challenging, though, especially if they are still recuperating and unable to manage independently. When family or friends can’t be there 24/7, how well will their recovery progress? In-home care providers closely monitor the patient’s condition for complications or issues. This attention to detail helps prevent hospital re-admissions, making recovery smoother and safer. Choosing home care for recovery supports physical healing, provides peace of mind, and delivers compassionate and dedicated care to patients. #inhomecare #homecaresolutions #recoveryassistance #homecare #companioncaregiver https://lnkd.in/g9NcR6GS

In the bustling, beeping labyrinth of intensive care units (ICUs), where life and death hang in a delicate balance, there exists empathy, compassion, and humanity known as the "3 Wishes Project." This remarkable initiative has been a source of solace and comfort for patients and their families, shining a bright light on intentional acts of kindness to provide compassionate care. “The beauty of the project lies in its simplicity and its impact on patients and their families," says Dr. Deborah Cook, an ICU intensivist at St. Joseph's Healthcare Foundation and founder of the 3 Wishes Project. “By focusing on the patient's humanity and what would bring them comfort, the 3 Wishes Project transcends the boundaries of conventional medical care, reminding us that healthcare is not merely about curing the body but also about helping to heal the soul."
