Formula 1's Las Vegas Grand Prix’s success (or not), matters most to Africans. Let me explain on this week's #gametimeseries, Edition #2. F1 is no stranger to the continent, with races held from 1934 to 1993, briefly interrupted by a boycott from 1985 to 1992 as a stand against apartheid. 30 years later, Africa is hungry for a Grand Prix(GP), but it's been a bumpy road. 🗞 The Latest: Over the past several years F1 CEO and President, Stefan Domenicali, engaged in talks with officials of the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, where the last African GP was held, as well as other stakeholders to resurrect the event. Originally slated for the 2023 calendar, plans hit a roadblock when local promoter, the South Africa Grand Prix Association(SAGPA), was reportedly “unable to deliver on the financial guarantees” as stated by Motorsport South Africa (MSA) chairperson, Anton Roux, and then again were booted from securing a 2024 spot because of the country's alleged arms deals with Russia; a country F1 withdrew from due to the invasion of Ukraine. 🤝 The Players: At least 7 parties have been involved in the bids including: Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, F1, Motorsport South Africa (MSA), venue providers, national and local governments, and promoters, Miami-based sports investment firm, 777, and SAGPA. But should these be the players? 🤔 💡 Shifting Business Model: - Liberty Media's 2016 purchase of F1 for $4.4 billion ushered in a new expansion strategy. - Prior to, F1 required the support of local organizers and governments however the Las Vegas GP is backed entirely by Formula One Management(FOM); the operating company of F1 that controls broadcasting, organization and promotional rights, to the tune of approximately $500 million. 🌍 Here's where it gets interesting for Africa: FOM could replicate a similar self-investment model in #emergingmarkets, to ensure financing and increase bankability. But with more contenders comes more options for F1. - Morocco 🇲🇦 , Rwanda 🇷🇼 , and most recently Zanzibar, have shown interest which would require a €500 million investment from the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority to build a custom track and fund operations. As it stands, the earliest any African country could host a GP is in 2025 but will these new markets inspire new business models for Formula 1? ⏰ Either way, there's a bit of a ticking clock as favorite Lewis Hamilton stated “I want to race there[Africa] before I retire.” _____________________________________ In addition to industry updates, the #gametimeseries is Playbook - Sports Business for Emerging Markets' weekly editorial; a play-by-play on a single trend or story in the global sports industry and its implications on emerging sports economies, by me for you. Follow for more and what do you think about F1 entering the continent? Let's chat in the comments. #linkedinsports #sportsbusiness

Research Director at Simpson Carpenter. Helping sports organisations win through market research and insights
A few days after the battle of the Lukes, the sport of darts finds itself in the scenario of wondering how best to maximise the significantly increased attention it received as a result of Luke Littler’s story. It reminds me of the position many sports which feature at the Olympic Games also face, receiving much more attention and interest for a short period but then a significant drop-off. How will the sport of darts look to make the most of this opportunity? What role will broadcasters, partners, the Talent and the grassroots play? I wonder if the Professional Darts Corporation are thinking about how research can help them understand the opportunity they now have? How much do they know about their potential new audience? What can they be doing to not only maintain, but drive future interest and participation? #mrx #marketresearch #sportsbiz #sport #sportbusiness
Luke Littler: What has 16-year-old's remarkable World Championship run done for darts?
