There is still a tremendous shortage of Philadelphia schoolteachers. A disproportionate amount of vacancies are within special education classrooms. "There have been more than 400 vacancies reported in each of the last two years, meaning that in any given year, thousands of students could face a revolving door of substitutes during crucial times in their development. And by far, the biggest shortage is among special education teachers. Of the 452 vacancies, about 150 were special ed. That’s one-third of the total." Does your high schooler's journey to college admissions feel like navigating a maze without a map? We get it. Here are 4 ‘clues’ colleges have given us ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ 📚 Increased Competition: Getting into college is tough due to rising applications and lower acceptance rates, making it crucial to strategize well. 📚 Hot Majors and Competition: Fields like computer science, nursing, engineering, and business are highly competitive due to demand and limited spots, affecting admissions criteria. 📚 Honesty in Applications: Colleges value alignment between students' intended majors and their academic backgrounds, discouraging applicants from gaming the system. 📚 Variations in Admissions Policies: Policies on major declaration vary; some universities admit directly, others don't, but nearly all require an intended major for application. Attention Texas K-12 campus principals and assistant principals! Lakisha Ball, Ed.S., a doctoral student at Belhaven University, is seeking your participation in a crucial study on the adoption of open educational resources (OER) in Texas. From Lakisha: “The purpose of the study is to gain insight into the decision-making processes of Texas K–12 campus leaders regarding the adoption of open educational resources (OERs). The United States spends over $60 billion annually on textbooks in K–12 public schools. Despite two decades of availability and research that validated the cost-effective alternative to traditional textbooks, OERs have remained underutilized in classrooms. Additionally, the reasoning and motivations guiding Texas K–12 campus leaders’ OER adoption decision-making are unknown, warranting further study. This research has the potential to provide educational leaders, state and local agencies, and policymakers with more effective techniques to reduce textbook costs and provide teachers access to high-quality instructional resources.” Data collection is ongoing through Aug. 2 via an 11-question survey that takes just 10 to 15 minutes to complete. If you are a Texas K-12 principal or assistant principal, your participation would be invaluable! Reach out to Lakisha at lakishaball@students.belhaven.edu or log in to www.atpe.org/research to participate. #OER #EducationalResearch #TexasEducation #EducationLeaders #Survey #EdTech
