Patient education isn’t just clinical. How you regard patients teaches them how to regard themselves. If clinical detachment was sufficient, more patients would follow through with making healthy choices. But it isn’t. Neutrality isn’t enough. Society isn’t neutral on our patients bodies. Society capitalizes on shaming and negative self image and the idea that some bodies are worth more than others, and makes unhealthy the default. If we want patients to make healthy choices, we first have to help them believe they are capable and worthy of the effort.
