We are in the planning stages for the 14th National Innovative Communities Conference, and we can't wait to see what exciting initiatives are developed based on what those in attendance discuss and learn. Eleven years ago, the NICC inspired the founders of the city of Jurupa Valley to launch their Healthy City initiative, Healthy Jurupa Valley. What is Healthy Jurupa Valley? **** HJV is part of a global movement of healthy city initiatives that work to improve the health and quality of life of all residents. Healthy Jurupa Valley is a public/private partnership between the City of Jurupa Valley and the nonprofit agency Reach Out. The mission is to inspire residents to ignite change, bringing greater health, safety, and quality of life to everyone in the city. The initiatives we've undertaken in the past decade are far-reaching, and the impacts are broad. ✅ Through the efforts of this initiative, HJV has increased green space, community gardens, and awareness of substance abuse issues and vaccine availability. ✅ We've held leadership academies to empower community members to become leaders and share resources. ✅ We've created "Shop the Walk" events to drive connection between local business and the community, and hosted face-to-face meetings with elected officials to allow them to meet the community members they represent. Health represents so much more than physical well-being, and the HJV initiative has grown community connection, safety, and well-being in immeasurable ways. We can't wait to bring this program to more Inland Empire cities! #NICC #innovativecommunities #communitydevelopment #HealthyJurupaValley #healthycityinitiative #bluezones

Food insecurity is a growing concern across Pinellas County. We are honored to work with Daystar Life Center, Inc. through our #projecttryton initiative. According to Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap 2020 study, which used data from 2018: Pinellas County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.2% (124,430 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.1% (38,080 children) Hillsborough County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.6% (178,820 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.5% (61,600 children) It's important to note that these numbers are from before the COVID-19 pandemic, which likely exacerbated food insecurity in these counties and across the United States. Feeding America projected that the overall food insecurity rate for the United States could have reached up to 15.6% in 2020 due to the economic impact of the pandemic. #endhunger

Partnering with local media can be invaluable in raising awareness of hospice funding challenges. It also helps mobilise support from the local community. Bolton Hospice worked with an Editor to secure a weekly spot in their local newspaper. Each issue shared hospice stories with the public, addressing misconceptions and highlighting the importance of hospice services. Want to do something similar at your hospice? Read the Example of Innovation to learn how it could work for you 👇 https://lnkd.in/dgCET8TH

Title: St. Mary's River National Model Program: Scientific Research; Sustainable Nutrition Studio Guest: Robert (Bob) Parkinson, District Governor, Rotary International Rotary District #7630 "Future Vision" Project & President, King Oyster Farm, Lexington Park, MD Rotary International with its 1.3 million members believes world-wide change starts with a commitment to "Service above Self". In more than 34,000 clubs worldwide, members are volunteering in communities at home and abroad to supporting education and job training, providing clean water, combating hunger, improving health and sanitation, and eradicating polio, among thousands of local and international projects. Rotary clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicities and are not affiliated with any political or religious organizations. The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace. The Rotary International Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. Rotary International Foundation has changed the fundamental format and purpose of its grant process. The Foundation recognized the need to use its limited resources more effectively. In 2007, the Foundation spent 20 percent of its program budget on long-term activities with high impact, and 80 percent on short-term activities with minimal impact. The new grant model will reverse that: 80 percent of the program budget will support high-impact, sustainable projects. The new grant model will also help meet the priorities and goals of Rotary's strategic plan. The six areas of focus are: 1) Peace and conflict prevention/resolution; 2) Disease prevention and treatment; 3) Water and sanitation; 4) Maternal and child health; 5) Basic education and literacy; and 6) Economic and community development. The Trustees identified these as critical humanitarian issues that Rotarians are already addressing worldwide. Previous Rotarian experience and interest in these areas will promote project success.
