In a breakthrough for the future of die-to-wafer (D2W) bonding, CEA and Intel have optimized a hybrid direct-bonding, self-assembly process that has the potential to increase the alignment accuracy as well as fabrication throughput by several thousand dies per hour. This #experiment is currently running at GSI/FAIR: 🔸🟠 Semiconductor doping and annealing with intense ion pulses from #laser-#plasma acceleration 🟠🔸 🟠 Machine: PHELIX 🔸 Ion: boron 🟠 Energy: 0 to 30 MeV 🔸 Intensity: ~10^12 ions/cm^2/ns 🟠 Pulse: few ns Intense ion pulses from laser-plasma acceleration can simultaneously excite, heat and dope materials. The PHELIX laser with boron foils will implant a very high flux of boron ions into #diamond samples. We have observed that this process turns diamonds into #superconductors at low temperatures (~0.5 K). The goal of this beamtime is now to understand and optimize this extreme non-equilibrium process better and to form materials with tunable transition temperatures to a superconducting phase.
