Over the past few weeks, I've found myself caught in a frustrating cycle, jumping through one hoop after another just to access the healthcare I require. It's been a disheartening experience akin to a hamster endlessly spinning on its wheel, with no progress to show for it. Amidst all the excitement surrounding innovations like ChatGPT and other AI applications in healthcare, there's a critical point that I wish to emphasize: the profound importance of human touch in healthcare, and a #patientcentered healthcare system based on #designthinking principles. While advancements in technology are undoubtedly promising, it's essential that we don't lose sight of the fundamental need for genuine human interaction, especially in such a sensitive and personal realm as healthcare. I firmly believe that healthcare organizations need to awaken to this reality and reevaluate how their systems are tailored to address the daily struggles faced by patients. Rather than placing paperwork and rigid procedures at the forefront, it's high time that these systems prioritize the actual needs of patients. Adapting to the challenges posed by an expanding population and striving to provide quality care is an ongoing endeavor. However, what truly weighs on my heart is witnessing a growing disconnect within the system, as individuals seem to have become desensitized, convinced that machine-driven efficiency and rigid adherence to proper procedure should supplant the irreplaceable essence of human compassion. I hope that who hold the power to shape the healthcare landscape will reassess the balance between efficiency and the intrinsic human empathy that is at the heart of healing. Instead of demanding “Fill out the paperwork ahead of time or you will be punished and stripped away of your appointment,” ask with compassion, “How are we gonna design a fool-proof system so that patients are set up for success while providing necessary health information in time?” Instead of training humans how to answer automated customer service system correctly like a dog, training the machines to recognize that a human caller really needs to connect with another human!

Our recent article (open access) analyses the implementation of remote fitting and related services in audiology and finds that especially disruptive innovations (and often AI-based) face individual resistance, and that this resistance increases with greater integration of employees into operational team processes.
