After the COVID-19 pandemic caused major disruptions in cancer clinical trials in 2020, The Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI), which is comprised of 105 cancer centers, solicited a series of voluntary surveys from members to assess how clinical trials were impacted. Tara Lin, MD - medical director of The University of Kansas Cancer Center's Clinical Trials Office and chair of the AACI CRI Steering Committee - was a lead author on a report summarizing the survey results, recently published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) Cancer Spectrum. The most important specific treatment for lobular cancer is endocrine therapy. That’s its backbone treatment to prevent relapse. The vast majority of classic lobular cancers are estrogen dependent and the biggest mistake in treatment that I see repeatedly is stopping endocrine therapy prematurely in the adjuvant setting allowing for relapse. Understanding lobular biology is key to prevent unnecessary relapses. Any patient with a diagnosis of lobular carcinoma on adjuvant endocrine therapy whose oncologist plans to stop treatment, should seek an expert second opinion before they do. That is my practical advice for all patients with lobular cancer. #lobularcarcinoma #ILC #endocrinetherapy #tamoxifen

Excited to see our latest manuscript published in Current Oncology MDPI! Our analysis of the National Cancer Database, in which we attempted to control for multiple confounding factors through inverse probability of treatment weight (IPTW), indicated, among others, that: • Non-Hispanic Black patients were 12% more likely to undergo resection of a locally advanced rectal cancer with positive margins compared to non-Hispanic White patients. • Patients treated in the northeastern United States were 9% less likely to have positive margins compared to those treated in the south. • Patients treated in academic/research centers were 11% less likely to have positive margins compared to to those treated in community cancer programs.
